Help with rough start in first gear
« on: September 12, 2015, 01:22:44 PM »

2014 Breakout has had a rough initial acceleration since new. I leave up on the clutch and the bike shudders for a second before "grabbing" and going. It's like I'm starting in second gear. I've had it to the dealer twice. Had a dyno tune, which seemed to help slightly, but it was no cure. The bike also hesitates on startup. Replaced the fuel pump but no help there either. Can anyone offer advice?  :-\

The shudder  when you go to move may be the clutch..  The start up that may be tune.. IS the bike 100% stock or have you changed pipes cams tuner etc?

Bassani two into two pipes. Stock cams. Dyno attached.

Get rid of the syn 3 in the primary, use Formula +.

Syn 3 is fine, I service a couple bikes with over 70K and they both use Syn 3 without a problem ever. As sure as poster above was this was a problem, I am sure it isn't.
Give it some more throttle and let clutch out quicker.

My 2010 cvo street glide does the same thing and it has 26k. If I don't have the rpms up around 2 when taking off it studders. I'm going to try a new cam and see if it goes away. My bike is like your all stock except exhaust and programmer

X2 on syn 3 being adequate for the primary. If you have a shudder it's something else.

RoadDawg, how many miles on your bike?  Mine started out that way, but by 3,500 miles, it became noticeably smoother. And like CVODON says, it took a difference in feel on clutch and throttle--much different from my '95 FLSTF--to find the balance.

9000 miles on the bike. Crazy thing is if I let out the clutch and don't touch the throttle the bike will drive off smoothly. But when I twist the throttle and give it a little gas and leave out the clutch it shudders and sometimes stalls.

It sounds to me like you need to go back to the tuner, have him look at the afr at idle and just above. The stumble appears to be fuel related, not clutch. It may have been left very lean in the tune, should be around 13.8. Do you get any popping on deceleration from 2000rpm down?  twinotter

Sounds like a tuning issue.....not sure of a good tuner around Greenville. Maybe worth a road trip down to central Fl to Doc's Performance Tuning. Think their are a couple very good tuners in Ga. also. Seems like the dealership your working with is overmatched if they cannot tune this stumble out from off idle.  A good tuner is worth their weight in gold.

Sounds like a typical Harley dealership 30 minute tune.  Sell the SEPST, install a canned map, make a run on the dyno to make it look like they actually did something, and call it a day.

Find a competent tuner.  I seriously doubt your dealership even knows what that is.
