Help Identifying source of loud Whirling Sound?
« on: September 28, 2015, 07:22:50 AM »

Just finished a 3 day trip through upper Michigan and on last day I started to get a loud high pitched whirling sound when decelerating and down shifting.  It did not happen ever time but enough to concern me.  Approximately 12,000 miles on the 2010.  Was definitely coming from the primary side of the engine.  Thanks.

Inner Primary Bearing? Automatic chain tensioner adjusted itself too tight? From primary side, can't think of anything else. One of our experts should have some additional suggestions.

My bike once started making a loud whirring sound like you describe.  It sounded like a turbocharger spooling up and down.  LOUD.  The primary chain tensioner had ratcheted down too tight and wouldn't release.  Replaced it with a Hayden tensioner eventually.  Seemed to cure it.

Lilcoot you hit the nail on the head.  Exactly the sound.  At the dealer now.  Thanks

If you have to replace the primary bearing best to use the Baker one instead of the HD unless they have been upgraded. This advice came from hddude (Jim) Metal Dragon a member and Vendor on this site. I have had no issues since, roughly 25k miles now. Hope you are fixed and back on the road soon.

Smee.  The dealer advised it is done but I have not picked it up yet so I have not had a chance to give it a good ride.  They advised they put a new compensator in it and serviced the clutch and checked the bearings etc which they found in good shape.  I had passed on the comments made by members here regarding the tensioner.  I had to go with Harley parts because the bike is still covered with a ESP.  They have also made me an offer to trade it even up for a 2016 CVO Street Glide Black Licorice with Blue Cobalt Flames they have in stock so I am pondering that.  The 2016's list out for $42,500 up here in Canada plus 13% taxes so they are basically offering me high 40's for my Trike.
