Raising CVO Deluxe?
« on: January 18, 2016, 10:20:22 AM »

I have a 2014 CVO Deluxe and it is an awesome bike, however I need some input for making even better. I am interested in doing something to give me slightly more ground clearance. I am 5' 9" so I have plenty of room to go up a little in the rear if possible and still be flat footed on pavement. I have scraped my pegs a few times (once that scared me) so does anyone have experience with trying to raise the bike just a little? As far as I know the bike is stock.
Thank you!

This is an unusual request for a softail (but it does happen for factory-lowered touring models).  You'll need to be careful not to raise the rear above the front, or safety and handling could be compromised.

ShotGunShock http://www.shotgunshock.com/pdf/SSComparison_Chart2.pdf says their shock can add one inch height.
Ultima Performance http://www.ultimaproducts.com/SoftailShocks.pdf says the maximum ride height can be adjusted at installation, but I don't know how much.

I know Progressive Suspension http://www.progressivesuspension.com/product/1415/422-series-shocks has height-adjustable shocks for softails, but IIRC it's only to lower the bike from stock height.  You might contact them to see if they have any suggestions for using those (the 422s) to raise instead of lower the bike.  PS is less expensive than some other brands (still not cheap), but many people feel their ride quality is sub-par.

Works Performance http://www.worksperformance.com/html/softail.html, http://www.customcyclecontrols.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=42/mode=prod/prd42.htm also have height adjustable softail shocks that might be usable to raise the height.

I hope other people with more knowledge will chime in here.  Good luck.

Thank you for the reply. I was already considering the Progressive shocks, but I wanted to see if others have done other things or if this may not be recommended on a CVO Deluxe. I have heard that it will still be adjustable with the Progressive shocks and that the ride will be nice. I already enjoy the ride... just not the constant worry about scraping. It doesn't happen very often, but it only takes once for it to scrape on something that upsets my ride and puts me down. I'm thinking if it can be raised about an inch that it will be enough to minimize the problem--and ease my mind. I am not an aggressive driver, but I do like to have fun!
Thank you!

HD offers these shocks that will raise the rear suspension: P/N 54000041 They're standard on the taller Softails like the Fat Persons and Heritage. They are shorter than the stock Deluxe shocks which pulls the rear suspension closer to the forward frame. That lowers the rear tire raising the rear frame ~3/4-1".

Alternatively from the factory both your shocks and these are typically pre-set for the lightest of riders ~165#. Both can be adjusted for heavier loads and will reduce the tendency to compress in a turn and scrape the frame. I prefer 2 turns out from the light base setting.

I've installed several on my low Softails and have not had an issue with overall handling.

Thanks for raising this topic as I have the same issue in terms of wanting to raise a '14 Deluxe.

I understand HD have a product "Softail Comfort Flex Rear Shock" which claims on the HD website to be designed:-

"For the rider willing to exchange the low profile "slammed" look for improved ride comfort, the Softail® Comfort Flex Rear Shocks raise the seat height and the riding comfort level."

Claims to "raise the seat height by 1" and deliver an improved ride through longer stroke".

Appreciate any feedback.
