Harley Intercom in Shoei Neotech Helmet
« on: February 15, 2016, 07:28:16 PM »

Has anyone installed the factory headsets and boom mic in a Shoei Neotech helmet. The speaker housings are bigger than the recess in the helmet. I don't want to modify helmet. We use all of the functions of the factory radio, IPod , intercom, zumo. I am not sure if there is a better way to go?
Scala? Any help would be appreciated .

I got my Neotech last year and while I don't have the Harley headset installed, I did have a J&M set put in by Sierra Electronics in OH.  Standard procedure for installing the speakers in that helmet seems to be trimming away the depression in the thin plastic liner to fit the speakers and attaching them to the shell of the helmet.  Gotta admit, I wasn't fond of cutting that liner, but those guys are pros and a Shoei dealer to boot, so they know their business.  The system works well for GPS, IPod, radio, and my favorite for long distance rides, audible books.  Good luck.

Will that application lessen the integrity of the helmet?

I have the HD headsets in our Neo-Tec's. I just trimmed out the depression in the replaceable earpiece insert to fit the speaker. Good, tight fit, excellent sound quality.
Saw question above regarding helmet integrity, not sure how you could think this. Your not modifying the helmet, just enlarging the speaker pocket and this is a inserted plastic part, not part of the helmet "bucket".
I am satisfied and feel safe.

Hotfire, this is the same technique used in every helmet I've owned.  Everything from Arai, to Schuberth, to the Shoei.  The liner that's trimmed is also used to snap in the padded liners and the area trimmed is opposite the ears, what seems to be a low impact area.  The shell of the helmet is not affected.  I'm not an engineer, but it's my best guess that the integrity of the helmet isn't impacted in any material way and I've never felt my safety has been compromised.  Hope this helps.

Thanks all. I was just looking to see if it had been done before and any feedback good or bad and to take advantage of the knowledge in our group. I will proceed with making room for the speakers.

What did you use to trim the inside liner? Thanks

I tried just Velcro into the existing cups and it resulted in to much pressure onto my ears/ jaw area. I will need to remove liner as mentioned by the others. I have a little saw blade for a dremmel I think I will try unless someone with experience has a better suggestion.
Thanks All

You should be able to use an X Acto knife.  The liner isn't all that thick.

I used Xacto knife and then dressed it up with a Dremel. Pretty easy.
