Garmin nuMaps Lifetime Updates Zumo 550
« on: November 10, 2015, 12:16:42 AM »

I have a 2009 Zumo 550 that has never been updated. I Purchased a card for lifetime updates. I know that I need a SD card for big updates. Is nuMaps what get on the SD card and then placed into Zumo?  Will the update do anything for North America NT program.
I am a little confused and don't want to screw up when I first use the update. The website is useless and it takes for ever to deal with Garmin. Thanks

Get an SD card (a 8 Geg will do just fine). Put it in the GPS, go to the Garmin update web sit. It will ask you to install Garmin Express go ahead and do that. After Express is installed on your computer just plug your GPS in and Express should startup and guide you through any updates. It will probable find that you need firmware and software updates along with map updates. When it comes time for the map update the program should tell you that it sees an SD card and ask you if you want the maps loaded to it, select Yes and you will get the entire US and Canada map.

It can be a bit slow so be prepared to spend some time waiting for the map update.

And by slow, he means hours!!!  depending on you connection speed, easily plan on it taking 3 hours to update everything....

I did the update. Had to pick from one section or another. Update was too big. It did not show my SD card. I know it's good because I can remove it from the gps and read it. Don't know why it didn't do as you suggested it would. My bad luck I guess.  Thanks

Try This,

What do I do if my device doesn't support the SD card feature during the Garmin Express map update?

In situations where a Garmin device does not have sufficient internal memory to load full coverage of a City Navigator NT map update, Garmin Express allows the maps to be installed to a removable SD / MicroSD card. Most devices support this feature, but there are some exceptions:
◦nuvi 295
◦nuvi 300/500/600/800/805 series
◦nuvi 5000
◦zumo 450/550/665
◦GPSMAP 640
◦Aviation devices

These devices do not support this feature. Garmin Express will automatically offer to install a smaller coverage region to these devices when there is not enough internal memory to install full coverage. Coverage regions may be changed as often as desired. To install a different coverage area, see How do I reinstall maps or change coverage using Garmin Express?

If full coverage is needed on one of these devices, a workaround exists to install the maps to an SD / MicroSD card.

To install a map update to a memory card using this workaround, the map update must first be installed to the computer.

If the update has not been installed to the device yet:
1.Open Garmin Express
2.Select the device to update
3.Click on View Details
4.Click on Installation Options
5.Select Computer and Device
6.Click on Install or Install All
7.Accept the license agreement
8.Click Continue
9.Select a region to install to the device, then click Continue

If the update has already been installed to the device previously:
1.Open Garmin Express
2.Select the device to update
3.Click on Map Options
4.Click on Install to Computer
5.Accept the license agreement
6.Click Install Update

After the installation is complete, maps can be installed to the memory card using Garmin MapInstall. To do this, follow the instructions in the article How do I install mapping to my device with MapInstall?

http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={5af8a260-fd05-11dc-ec92-000000000000}

Once the desired maps are installed to the memory card, they will function the same as maps installed to the internal memory.

Actually I find the Garmin Express Updater very easy to use. I have it installed on my computer and do the updates for myself and a couple of older neighbors.
Slick set-up, I do not find it to ever take over 1 hour, not sure why poster above said it could take three hours but maybe. I do like the way it tells you it is ok to step away as updates are installed.

Just updated my 550, and noticed that I have one map on the device storage that was updated today (changed from NE to SW maps, 1GB) and a map range I added yesterday on the SD card (1.8GB).

When I select map version on the gps I see the most recent version update.

Does this matter at all?

Cheers!

Glad I didn't upgrade when I canceled as they offered me the newest and greatest. But I remembered when I signed up the modem was $600 and crap as you said. Guess nothing has changed. Sorry you have to deal with it, hopefully something better will come along for you soon.
