What is the life expectancy of rear shocks on my Deuce?

I went to Harley dealer, OE shocks for my 03 FXSTDSE are no longer available but there is one pair in "vintage parts".  Parts dude also told me after research that the 04 FXSTDSE2 are different part numbers, and the chrome version are the ones in the current accessory catalog. Both bikes have the same specs as for clearance, seat heights etc... as far as I can find, so why or what did they change?
