Was the HK head deck an option?
« on: March 16, 2016, 08:58:26 AM »

So I finally mustered up the nerve to pull the fairing apart to investigate my sound system on my 05. Come to find the head deck is Radio Sound? All this talk about the HK decks has me wondering. I have hogtunes gen 3 5.25s up front with tweeter pod and JL in the lowers. Sounds good with a Memphis Audio amp but, gunna update the deck.

Radio Sound was the only radio offered in '05 and earlier.  The Radio Sound unit was discontinued and H-K radios were introduced for the 2006 model year.  At the time they were not backward compatible, but that may have changed by now.  A good source of information about that would be Iron Cross (a member on this site and well respected experts on the repair of the H-K units).

Still not backward comptible directly from Mother Harley as a new bolt in.  Harley will tell you no.  If the radio is previously programmed to work in any other 06 and newer bike it'll work all the way back to the 1998 bikes though.  Just needs to be an already functional radio rather than a brand new and never programmed unit fresh out of the box.

You will have various issues with the AVC function on the prior bikes though.  These differences vary a bit also.  On the more recent bikes you can make it work with a wiring change if you don't want to send the radio off for reprogramming.  On the older only the reprogramming will make AVC work.  On my 2000 even that was a little sketchy though.  Fortunately the Auto Volume Control doesn't worry me.  It's not a big deal to lower the volume a bit when I slow down to come back in to town.

I've been running a H-K radio on a 2002 Ultra for years - fully backward compatible, there is only a single wire which is different. You will also need to change your speakers. BTW - AVC functions just fine...
