Pushrod and Tube Clearance
« on: March 21, 2016, 04:40:13 PM »

I did some cam chest work just a few days ago. Part of the work included S&S timesaver pushrods and covers. After I installed the set, I noticed that the covers moved when the engine was turned over. I contacted S&S and was told that the covers had to be cut off (shortened). Nothing in the paperwork that came with them, but I cut them as instructed. I still have one that is contacting (rear intake). I'm not real warm and fuzzy with this set up right now and am thinking of going in another direction.
I'll be pulling the pushrods as soon as I can get time. I'll be able to see where they are rubbing then. Anyone have a suggestion of how to either fix this once and for all or another product that will fit properly without having to modify? It's not hard work, just want to be done fiddling with this.
BTW: I see that others are setting the pushrods at 3.25 turns. I set mine at S&S recommended 4 turns. Am I going too tight for a 110?
Thanks!

I believe you have a different pitch on the S&S pushrods

Here is a pretty good read on the TPI or threads per inch and setting the pushrods.

Those setting S&S lifters at 3.25 turns are using SE pushrods = 24 TPI, S&S are 32 TPI. Adjustable pushrods need a larger diameter tube. You can bore yours or buy  the larger variation from S&S or SE.

Is there any advantage other then removing less hardware to change lifters.  Since we do our own work, pulling the tank and covers/rockers adds a couple of hours.  I have just been reading about the adjustments and it doesn't seem worth. By the way I just changed my lifters and it was a very easy job.  The hardest hard was coming up with the tools, since I am a metric car guy.

Any part numbers? I have the tubes that came with the push rods and already had to modify them. I need bigger rubes or smaller pushrods.

I assume you mean the uppers, use the originals and bore the top in 5/8" d x 1" deep.

The tube kit that comes in the quikee push rods have a aluminum inner. That is for a evo you can cut them ( its in the info)  or as I do just re use the stock inner. and those are to be set at 4 turns per the S&S info

There is a lot of play in the bolts that hold the Rocker arm plate down and it can be moved around from side to side.  It is important to center the plate or move it in towards the motor or the push rods can rub. This video shows the play in the bolts.

Guys get hung up on preload, just get them close to center, .110 on most lifters. Too tight is when they are bottomed and hold valves open.
Pull the rocker plate toward the intake and tighten to specified torque. Done. No need for the lockers.
Has the side benefit of better pushrod centering. Drill the upper tubed in the tops 5/8" D x 1" down.

Thanks!!  I used the stock inners and no problems thus far. If they don't leak oil, I'm in fat city. I re-read the paperwork and still can't find anything about cutting the inner tubes... but then I've missed things (repeatedly) before.  One thing that I noticed is that the S&S tubes extend further up past the pressed area than the stock ones. I think that's where mine were hitting. Instead of cutting that down, I just installed the stock inners even though they are pretty short.
Again, I can't thank you experienced guys enough for sharing your hard earned experience with the rest of us!!
