Cruise control help
« on: July 15, 2016, 07:13:06 PM »

I am posting on behalf of a friend who has a 2005 or 6 ultra.  His cruise control will periodically work and then turn off.   I recall a few years ago when I had a similar occurance on my 2003 Screaming Eagle Roadking, the problem was in the circuit that turned off the cruise control when the bike accelerated above a certain rate or increased speed beyond a certain limit.  Rather than incur a costly repair, I had that feature disabled.  Anybody know how to do that?
Thanks

Odds are he has a common problem that has bitten many of us, including yours truly.  The roll-off switch in the throttle idle cable tends to go bad over time, and when it does you can have a situation where the cruise will engage but any little bump of the throttle grip will shut it down.  The easy way to diagnose this is to disconnect the two spade connectors that attach from the wiring harness to the idle cable just forward of the fuel tank.  If you disconnect them and the cruise now works, you have located the problem.  A new idle cable will fix it, or he can elect to just tape off those two connectors at the harness and ride on.  The only thing that won't work is the roll-off of the throttle to disengage the cruise.  He can still disengage it by applying either brake or by turning off the cruise switch on the inner fairing.  I'm currently running mine disconnected until I get around to changing out the cable, and may never get around to it.

My cruise control would stop working and noticed my gear indicator was not working either.   Stop for gas restart the gear indicator and cruise would work for a while then cruise would kick out and no more indicator. This is on a 2015 SG. I just had mini apes installed. Could this be the same issue?

Hard to say for sure.  The gear indicator is controlled by the ECM and the rpm and road speed data collected from those two sensors.  If that data gets interrupted or corrupted, both the gear indicator and the cruise control can be affected.  Next time this happens make note of any changes in the speedometer and tachometer operation.  If those are also affected, I'd suspect an issue with the sensors and/or wiring.  If those functions don't change, then yes there is a possibility that a defective clutch switch could also cause the problems.  If the switch shows the clutch as being disengaged, it will shut down the cruise control and I'm thinking it also turns off the gear indicator.  One way to test that theory is to see if your gear indicator turns off whenever you pull the clutch lever in all the way.  I seem to remember that being the case back when Harley first installed those clutch switches, but don't know if that changed with the CAN bus bikes.

Almost forgot the other point I was going to make.  I'm assuming this problem began after you changed the bars, so make sure all the electrical connections are good.  Did you extend any of the wiring or just run the stock wires through the new bars?  I'm a firm believer in first looking at the last thing I changed or worked on right before a problem crops up.  More times than not the cause of the problem can be traced to that last change.

On my 2010 I had the HD turner on it. Twice the gear selector indictor (I think it was just 6th but can't recall) would stop.  Both times they had to remap the turner?  I found it out but it worked. The bike didn't have cruise control (convertible).

One of these days (or years, or decades) Harley is going to figure out that the entire motorcycle gets wet when caught in the rain or when being washed.  There is no excuse these days for a motorcycle suffering electrical failures because you got caught in the rain.
