Oil Cooler
« on: April 12, 2016, 07:31:23 PM »

Any merit to taking off the oil cooler on the lower front of a 2009 SERG?  Looks like it good use a good cleanout of the fins.  Is this very hard to do?

What do you want to do? Take it off to clean it or do away with it? Only a couple bolts and the lines but you can clean it on the bike if you want with a little "green" brake cleaner or similar and (I prefer) hot water to flush the fins. You definitely do not want to take it off and ride without it. Although some feel it is not the best cooler on the market it is way better than nothing.
I recommend the "Green" type brake cleaner as it is not quite as harsh as the regular kind in case you get it on the frame or surrounding areas.

I didn't mean to do away with the cooler.  I just want to clean it up.

Once you take the chrome cover off you will have more access and most likely won't need to actually disconnect the lines and totally remove the cooler to clean it.  That's the way I've always done it.  And Rooster is right, no matter how careful you are when changing oil filters, you will find old dirty oil under there.  I've taken to flushing that area immediately after an oil change with a degreaser and water spray rinse, which helps.

Spray rinse from the back side as much as possible.  Front side spraying just drives road crud & small stones deeper.  And be very careful with a pressure washer, fins can get damaged.
