Paint Problem 2013 CVO
« on: May 15, 2016, 01:41:10 PM »

Paint problem suddenly appeared on gas tank. I purchased this bike used. The local HD dealer was indifferent regarding this and was rather negative about the fact that I did not purchase a bike from them. HD customer service tech viewed pictures of the problem but had no mercy on me. HD will not help me at all financially to repair/replace the gas tank.  The HD dealer explained that if I purchased the bike from an HD dealer I may have had a better chance of getting financial support from HD customer service. See pictures of problem.

More than likely you purchased the bike w/o warranty (since the MoCo's warranty is only 24 months) from what appears to be not a H-D/MoCo dealer... along w/looking at the picture it appears to be a scratch vs a paint defect. Not sure what you are wanting/expecting. :nixweiss: The MoCo at their best have been known to be a "hard @$$" to original owners (not that I agree w/their practice) as it regards "paint defects" from the factory... you have by your description something (that looks like a scratch) that has "suddenly appeared" on a 3 year old bike.

Used bike, out of warranty, even if a paint defect I would think Harley would be willing to fix it.

A slight chance on a used bike if less than 2 years old.

I'm happy with the paint quality on my 13 SERK, good strong clear coat.

My 2015 SERGU has a very soft clear coat, HD knows this but there is little they will do.

Tony, if you're looking for someone to repaint that tank, you might want to check this guy out.  Highly recommended by many people on this site for doing a great job matching CVO paint.

Btw, Harley's MSRP for a replacement tank is $1502.49 painted and $1054 in primer.  Ridiculous either way.

This is not a scratch. It is a circular, thumb sized paint blister. The right side of the blister is visible as a crack in the paint. This bike is in mint low mileage condition, always garage kept. I had one paint guy look at it,  He explained that the problem suddenly appearing was most likely due to the paint being heated by the sun ... The paint in this area may not have been prepared properly for paint. This problem has been lying dormant over the last three years. Very unacceptable on HD finest paint job. HD's quick dismissive approach was poor customer support, considering this is a top of the line CVO. I received a quote from HD for $1900 to have them replace the tank. The bike would be out of service for at least 6 weeks because I would have to send in my tank to HD before they begin work on the replacement tank. Very poor service but they were quick with the $1900 ridiculous bill.

JERRY- Thank you for your advice regarding Extreme Dimension. He also came highly regarded to me by a friend of mine who owns a 2014 SERK. Very helpful!
