2007 Road King CVO SE3 speedometer
« on: May 15, 2016, 10:07:59 PM »

I need help from you folks.  I am in Canada, and imported the bike noted above from the USA.  It has only a miles per hour (only) speedo on it, and my federal government has made it a requirement that it have kilometers per hour on it.  It can be a combo mph/kph speedometer.  I ordered an HD 70900072A at the suggestion of the TECH Support folks at HD and they gave me a guaranteed buy it back on the product if it didn't work.  In order to keep it all above board and not give them any reason not to buy it back if it didn't work, I got the dealership to install it.  It would not flash past 96 percent and would not get to the point where it is usable.  I have until June 1 to get this looked after.  I am in a bind.  What options do I have?  it would appear from looking through the HD parts catalog that there are a multitude of options except for my CVO.  I have now opened a file with the regional HD service guy and he is going to call me early this week.  I don't really care if i only have to bolt something on the handle bar for the inspection, because I will go back to the MPH speedo as soon as the inspection is complete.  My issues are many.  I can turn a a wrench, but i am not what you would call an expert level kind of guy.  The dealership here said if I were to get an aftermarket non HD plug and play speedometer i could get it done by them.  If it is anything more involved than that, they are now taking appointments in July.  Clearly that doesn't work for me either.  You guys appear to have knowledge that most dealerships don't.  Help a brother out????  anyone????

So the HD dealership is no help. Seems like someone with HD tech support could figure it out.  :drink:

There are digital gauges that are DIY, but prolly an expensive option.

Good Luck

first off, while it is technically required for your RIV inspection, many US bikes in Canada have not been changed over.  CTC does the inspections and depending on location often pass a blind eye to this.  When I imported mine (2008 CVO Roadking) I had not issues with inspection with MPH speedo.

there are some custom gauge face makers that could take your current speedo and make you a new face, although it would probably take a few weeks.  There are also the digital combination units from Harley that are available.

What part of Canada are you in?

Winnipeg. I tried three different CTC stores and all were adamant. No stickers. It had to be a calibrated speedo. Any other suggestions?  Friends of mine had imported as well and are still driving with MPH only. If I could figure out a way to borrow one I would.

you could order a kph speedo from hd?  part number for your year bike in kph is 74719-07.  order it either 0kph or have them flash it with whatever mileage you want on it.  it will come with a sticker that indicates speedo is not original to comply with dot regs.  i assume the same in canada....

ride out of town to Brandon and try CTC there, or any used HD dealers around town that sell US bikes that still have MPH speedo?  Maybe they can point you to the right CTC.

maybe get one made over the winter if you really want in KPH.  These places make custom faces.

Also, when you go to the other CTC stores, don't ask or highlight the MPH issue.  If they ask, simply say everywhere else signs off on them as is (with stickers if required).

I went the other way and three myself in my sword. Found a bike loving guy and he did a quick look and eventually passed the bike. Now I am fully registered. Rode last night for the first time.

Glad to hear that.  Now that you don't have a deadline staring you in the face, you might want to investigate options for the future just in case this comes up again.  With plenty of time, you can look at some of the ideas mentioned in this thread, like a new face made for the existing gauge, or see if an overlay applied to the lens of the gauge with kph markings might meet the requirements.  I'm almost certain I've seen those before, from the automotive aftermarket.
