Gassed
« on: October 06, 2004, 01:35:06 PM »

Has anybody else noticed that at highway sppeds, ( 70 - 80mph) that a lot of exhaust fumes come up around the rider?
I have the fairing deflectors, a std 12 inch windshield, and the lower fork air deflector. I rode the bike about 200 miles yesterday in this configuration and my eyes were burning from the fumes.
My bike also seems to run rich, the exhaust pipes are very black. Seems like one of the road tests on this bike mentioned that it seemed to be running rich. [smiley=shocked2.gif]

10" and 8" windshield, stock fairing and stock forks. "no deplectors" 10 mph to 110 mph
I have never smelled any exhaust in 6000 miles,

Only three days on mine.  8" windshield and still has the stock pipes on it.  One trip of about 240 miles on the Interstate today.  No exhaust or fuel odor of any kind (at any speed).  Though it has at least finally gotten rid of that "new bike" stink.

For what it's worth my mufflers do also look like it could be a bit rich.  The mufflers on a  guy's green one here in town look that way too.

I just ordered an 8 inch windshield for my bike today.  I think I will try one thing at a time and see what it takes to stop the fumes from blowing back around me. While I wait for the windshield I think I'll take off the lower triple clamp air deflector and see if that helps.

Mobe you don't mention what you may have in the way of engine mods.  Do you have any?  If so, have you had it "dyno-tuned"?

The twin cams run a little on the rich side, stock.  Also, altitude might have an effect, if it's significant altitude.

mobe,
Check the exhaust bracket behind the rear head and make sure the nut did not fall off the threaded bracket stud.  You may have a rear exhaust leak at the head and that is why you are smelling it.  If the rear nut is missing I would bring it in to your dealer and tell them you want the exhaust gasket replaced in the head also.

So far the bike is stock in the engine and exhaust pipe department.
I live in an area that is about 1000 ft above sea level.
Removing the lower triple clamp deflector doesn't seem to help.
I will take a look at the rear exhaust bracket and see if thats loose.
thanks for the info....

I too have smelled the exhaust on the freeway speeds and at idle. I thought it was just me. I leaned out the PC a couple of notches on the midrange and it helped. I also leaned out the low speed and the smell decreased but te bike developed a slight surge so I put it back to where it was. The original pipes were very black too. I have the normal Eglide windshield installed if that helps.
