Stubby antenna : Gps
« on: June 13, 2016, 03:18:09 AM »

I am think of some stubby antenna for cvo limited. Use sirrus radio or media thumb drive 99 percent of time. So I don't care much about am/fm reception other than I hope it can pick up something 1 percent of time. CB on stock antenna is a joke. My old Ultra or Limited with 30 inch whips had a mile or two range and this cvo antenna is shorter. Unless I can see the other truck I doubt it works past 1/2 mile.

But main concern is gps? Anyone know where or how it gets its signal? Own antenna like xm? Or through one on the tour pak?

I would consider just removing both and placing rubber caps on the threads of gps don't need them

As for size, HD ones are 19 inches. Seen as small at 4 inch on Amazon. Stock not sure but probably 25-30?

There are two satellite antenna's, one for XM and one for GPS, both located in the fairing.  Each has it's own part number.

Yes to what the other posters said.  GPS and XM antennas in the fairing which causes a lot of issues for XM reception, BTW.

I have seen bullets, dice, post covers, etc. for the antenna mounts. All of which are relatively expensive for no functionality.  Then I ran across 4 inch "euro style" antennas at the local Autozone.  FM actually still works.  Haven't tried CB, but doubt there is any functionality there.  Anyway, doesn't look so bad.

I'm with you.  Media music and XM for tunes.

Thanks.

Did a Google search and found one poster who checked the antenna for function with a meter. (I remember impedance and length being the important factors from Army electronic missile days, but have no idea what meter the poster was talking about) Anyways he found the stubby he bought was useless by the meter, then checked stock antenna on CVO. FM was ok, but stock cb he reported was useless. Maybe why my reception is 300 yards also with stock ones.

It's an SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) meter to check the function of the CB antenna when transmitting.  Might have used a tunable signal strength meter to check the receive function on FM and CB.

Watched a video for JM selling their shorty antenna for 2014-16. They have a removable end cap which they pull a wire out the end to "tune" with the SWR meter. Other wise I guess it is close to proper tuning out of the package. The reviews said it appears to work better than stock HD on the CVO. I ordered two directly from them today. Offer a 20 percent discount for HD forum members (they don't check to see if actually a member). Email John Lazzeroni at john@jmcorp.com for discount code.
$28.99 each.....2x=$57.98 total.... $11.60 discount...$46.38 total. Free Shipping over $30.

I can say I have used their products before and got better reception than the HD shorty. But new model so will let you know.
