Bass sound muddy/distorted
« on: June 02, 2016, 05:13:12 PM »

Hi all. Ok, I have a 2014 CVO Ultra which I purchased new. Previously had a 2012 CVO Ultra. On the '12, I was very happy with the sound. Now on my '14, the bass is utterly awful. Sounds very muddy or distorted. I know I should have had it checked out under warranty, but didn't as in the past 2 years I didn't ride it much. So, whenever the song has any heavy bass, it just breaks up. Not a total distorted sound, but not pleasant sounding either.
Most of the time it's not much of an issue, just depends on the music. BTW, I have the bass cut way back in the audio settings too. Any ideas? Replace with new ones, upgrade, or maybe just live with it! HaHa! Thanks for any insight. Bob F

Bob, compared to a quality bagger audio system, Harley boom stuff is poor. There are many options to upgrade to where you can have stereo sound that will rival a good cage system. On my last 2 cvo's, I have gutted the head units, speakers and amps and replaced with quality components that can be controlled with factory buttons.

I hear ya kojak, but if I do anything, I'm thinking I'd just replace the 2 fairing speakers. Just gonna do some research on it to see my options.

Try the aux port with a set of decent headphones and see if the sound still sucks.  I'm betting it has a lot less to do with the head unit and a lot to do with the amp and speakers.

Lot of guys use Sony headunits with wire harnesses that make them compatible with factory controls. I prefer the Aquatics since its a direct Harley replacement and its a IP Splashproof unit (water proof) since I ride in all kind of weather. The distortion on Harley stock radios is pretty high, even with a good amp, your input signal is not really clean.
