Oversize air filter?
« on: June 28, 2016, 12:42:10 AM »

Time to change my stock filter.... Seems like I remember people saying there is an oversized filter element for the stock CVO housing? A 3" filter element? I've searched but haven't found anything. Is it worth upgrading to a larger element or get a K&N replacement. Does HD sell the K&N filter? Thanks

Thanks, that is the beast. The next question, is it worth running? When I searched I couldn't find anything on it, makes me think there aren't a lot of people running them. This guy, or the standard K&N?

There is a thread on here about it. I believe the biggest complaint is you have to be bow-legged. I find it hard to believe you will gain any real performance advantage with a stock or near stock motor.

It's not likely to be of any benefit unless you're running some mods that significantly increase air flow through the engine.  It if were me, I'd either keep the stock cleanable element or go with the same size K&N element.  Harley sells the K&N replacement element through the dealers, and of course you can buy them from K&N or one of their dealers.

My stock filter turned dark after a year and could not get it cleaned up.  Think the engine vent probably got some oil mist on it.  Probably was still flowing fine after cleaning but looked bad to me.  I ordered a K&N replacement from my local auto parts store with Jerry's number above.   Most auto parts stores can get it but do not stock it and not much more than the stock filter.
