The Darkside...
« on: June 09, 2016, 03:03:27 PM »

Has anyone went to the Darkside with their CVO?  For those who don't know, that is putting a car tire on the rear of the bike.  There are some discussion in the regular HD forums but wanted to know what you guys think.

Please include in your post the tire and size if you have visited.

It has been discussed in this website in the past.....may want to do a search and read the old threads......
In general most H-D riders say it's a bad idea to use a car tire on a motorcycle. You may get more mileage but handling and safety will be compromised.

And then there are those who have actually done it, as in ridden thousands of miles on a car tire with nothing but good things to say about it.

I rode my '11 RGU for more than 20,000mi with a car tire, never self destructed, stopped far better than the stock tire, handled fine, and the ride is 1000% better.
When it comes time to change the rear tire on my 15RG CVO I will be looking at car tires again.

I used a 205/55/r16, fit fine on my '11 Road Glide Ultra. Mine cleared fine, a couple guys had belt clearance issues.
So, if you're concerned, you can go to a 195/55r16.

What kind of tire pressure were you running in it Tom? I don't plan on doing it but for others, it will bring that up quick in the post.

I ended up in the 35psi area. Too high and it will follow every crack and rain groove in the road, too low and it just feels a bit mushy.

I put a 205/55R-16 Michelin Primacy HP ZP BMW, Run Flat, on my 2010 Ultra.
Ended up running about 30psi.  I thought it was great, heck of a lot more running contact surface to the pavement, smoothed out the ride also.
Bought the tire from Tire Rack for $168, pulled the rim/wheel myself took it to the local tire shop had the new tire mounted for $25. Also put in the Ride On beads I think they're called.

When my 2015 Limited needs a rear tire, I'll go back to the dark side!

I noticed you used a 16" tire, even though an 18" came on the '11 SERGU.  What kind of rim did you use?
