70-T Thunderstar rear pulley on FXR3?
« on: July 23, 2016, 10:44:38 AM »

I want to shorten - raise numerically - the stock gearing ratio on an FXR3 from 2.925 :1 to 3.15 : 1 by swapping in a 70-Tooth rear pulley for the 65-T rear pulley (already have the 136-T belt, as well). In an attempt at uniformity, I would like to retain the stock "Thunderstar" theme. A google search yields no results for a pre-'00 70-T Thunderstar rear pulley but does show a '00 Dyna 70-T Thunderstar rear pulley.

Will a '00+ Dyna model 70-tooth Thunderstar rear pulley H-D part # 40096-00 directly bolt on to the rear wheel?  It's been awhile, and I can't remember the specs of '00 and later Dyna wheels.  Do they have the same bolt pattern as '99 and earlier era?

If you look at the installation instruction sheet for that sprocket, it shows that you would only need different bolts to mount it on Dyna's based on the model year of the bike.  Click on the attached pdf.

I can't find any information on the wheels installed on the FXR2 or 3, but I'm guessing Harley wouldn't have invented a brand new wheel just for that very small run of bikes.  The odds are good that they used a wheel designed to also fit the Dyna models.

Rear wheel for the FXR2 is solid aluminum (Softail Custom and the FXR Custom models among other models).  Rear wheel for the FXR3 is the Thunderstar _ not sure which other models use it besides some '00+ Dyna models.

Also, the pre 2000 wheels were Timken bearings, so they won't "future" fit to the '00+ model Dynas.  However, the '00+ later model sealed bearing wheels will retrofit to the '99 and earlier swingarm models.

I'm guessing then the reason for the different bolts is because of the difference width between the pre-'00 (FXR) and '00+ (Dyna) pulleys. The '00+ Dyna pulley has a width of 1 and 1/8" vs. the FXR's 1.5" - pulley width...
