High volume oil pump
« on: August 14, 2016, 05:38:42 PM »

Hi

I'm trying to find out what kind of oil pump is in our 2015 CVO Street Glide

I know it's a high volume oil, pump but is it the same as the SE High volume oil pump as I've tried researching on the internet but there seems to be some confusion

What's the difference between the CVO high volume oil pump & SE high volume oil pumps

Cheers Darren

The oil pump in your CVO is the same oil pump that's in all the other Twin Cam engines since 2007.  That oil pump was an upgrade from the previous pump used from 1999 through 2006.  The latest SE pump claims to be a further improvement; the following is taken directly from Harley's description in the catalog:

"The improved Screamin’ Eagle high-flow oil pump provides higher pressure when the oil is hot to keep pressure drops to a minimum and increases the oil supply by 16% and the scavenging by 29% over the ’06-later Original Equipment oil pump."

Now I have a question for you.  Is there some reason why you are looking for a higher volume oil pump?

there is no reason other than trying educate myself, I got to admit it's tempting to upgrade to one if those pretty looking units like the S&S Tc3 oil pump cam plate

but I can't see any reason as I understand what we have now is more than sufficient for our needs unless I was going to race it

I agree with you.  They're paramount if you're building, or buying a Big Motor.  I'm no wrench, but that's what a reptuable builder will use.  They don't ask you, or recommend it.  They include it in the build.  Later--HUBBARD

Darren,
I wouldn't discount the pump/plate from S&S from your thought process if you upgrade to the 117.
The reason I upgraded was to get a better low RPM oil flow through the engine without aeration.  I was seeing very low pressures in stop and go traffic sitting at a light generally just barely over the 0 line by eye and less than the 1st hash line.   When I changed out the pump I was seeing about a 6-8 pound difference on the gauge during the same type of situations.     I have little faith in the overall accuracy of the gauge, but it is close enough and similar enough to other bikes I own and friends bikes and their gauges to use it as a guide.   So rather than sitting at the first hash or less from left to right on the pressure gauge I now sit at about the 2nd hash even in the heat of the summer down here in Florida.   To me that makes it worth while for me.

I believe a few others have also noted this improvement and maybe they will chime in as well.

I sell and install the tc3 pumps and have observed the same results.

I use a stock pump on my personal 124" with a spring/amplifier I made.25# hot at a idle,55# on the road.motor sumps 4-5 oz when drained

I agree, and have seen the same.  One thing I like about the S&S pump and plate is it keeps my minimum oil pressure higher and my peak pressure is lower than with other pumps.  Keeps me in-between the 15-35psi range on a warm engine.

People have their own opinions on what oil pressure is needed, but I would love to see a min of 20 and max of 30.  S&S is the closest to this mark.

FWIW that's exactly what I'm seeing with mine. S&S oil pump and cam plate. I really like that needle up at hot idle. Total oil pressure at cruise is just short of the stock set up.

WE lapped the spring in my 120, but running a SE Pump in my 124.  I like seeing it way right of center on hot days.  Don't drop much to the left of center at idle, but I avoid traffic as much as possible.  Run straight 60W in this weather.  Later--HUBBARD
