In '68 a Sportster listed for about 1747.00, i was in flight school with 3 months to go until NAM.
Stopped at Potter HD in Albany, Ga., one man shop, one sportster in stock, the show room was the size of your garage, maintenance shop the same.
He sold me the 68 sportster for 1500.00 cash, thru in a helmet because he believed in them.
Six years later, buying a house with a baby on the way, I sold the sportster with straight pipes and a chrome oil tank for 2350.00.
At 70, i'm not thinking about resale, this one will carry me all the way.
The CVO's are beautiful bikes, significantly nicer than non CVO bikes. I think a well maintained, with reasonable to lower mileage CVO, will still bring a good price in the private market in a year or two.
I was out ridding two nights ago and while my lights looked pretty good, but i decided to crank my headlight up a half turn and fire for effect.
Until you make that fateful decision enjoy the hell out of it, ride it, clean it, admire it. There is a lot of value there.
The days of making, or breaking even are far behind us, you have to consider all of the pleasure you have gotten over the years from the bike. Work that into the equation and it may help you rationalize the price you may get.
I don't know of anybody making any money when they sell their car or truck.
