2000 Road Glide - Stock tires wear too fast, others?
« on: August 23, 2016, 03:16:08 PM »

Hi guys

Im on my third rear tire in 25K miles.   All HD will tell me is Dunlops are the only tire, but they dont last worth crap.

On my Kawasaki Concours, and my Goldwing before that I run Miztlers (sp) and I have been very happy with the ride and with the wear.

Im on ontario, but I am always willing to drive to NY State to get new tires.  BTW a little widder tire would be nice too

Any suggestions?

cheers

There are a lot of manufacturers that make a tire to fit the back of a 2000 Road Glide.  I also like the Commander II tires from Michelin.

Is your third tire within 25k miles now worn out?  You just getting started on the third?  Somewhere in between those options?

10,000 on a rear tire wasn't outside the norm.  So you may not be unusual in what you're seeing.

so HD tells me to stick with the stock tire, 130/90-16

Should I go to a fatter tire, maybe a 150, the tire looks too small on the bike

"Looks" there is an individual thing.  The old SERGs still have the full 1.5" wide pulley.  So you're more limited on tire width than on the later models.  Maybe a 140.  It's not really enough difference to matter.

Here's a decent price on the Michelin Commander II tire for the rear.  I get better life out of them than I did the Dunlop or Metzler tires.

Many things can account for premature wear.  Our hand on the throttle is the biggest difference maker.  Beyond that keeping good inflation and even road surfaces can all make a difference.

Im not a fast rider, I do that on my Kawasaki

I tour on the SERG, I check my pressures all the time, but the stock dunlops seem to cup really fast.  Never had this issue with my other bikes

I dont care so much about the look, I want a good ride, and long life... two things I am not getting now

I ran a 140 for a while but it was wide enough to ware the belt cover (plastic one) by pushing the cover against the belt. Unless you change the swing arm out to a newer version, you are stuck with the stock size.

A Dunlop MU 85 16 will just clear the belt & does look better IMO.  I think they were stock on '05 & '06 touring?

I got a 140 to fit on my 2001 Ultra. Just had to remove that brush off the belt guard. To go with a 150, I used a Pingle wheel spacer.

I used to buy. Dunlop Elite 3. From jp
catalog. . For my 04SEEG. . . They would wear really well. Much better than the stock dunlops. . Ryan them. You won't be sorry.  And handled great in the rain too. . .  Stuart. .
