2017 CVO Limited
« on: October 04, 2016, 07:25:17 PM »

Friend had his bike delivered to his home today. On his very short first ride he noticed a big clunk when going from neutral to first. Was not sure if this was normal but decided to call the dealer. They are picking up the bike in the morning. He is a bit bummed....

They made a big deal in the launch interviews and releases about how they had improved not only the neutral rattle but also the clunk.  Add to any changes they may have made in the trans and clutch the fact that they lowered the idle speed almost 200 rpm, which should also reduce the clunk, and it's odd this particular bike has a "big" clunk.  Hopefully they won't blow him off with the usual "that's normal" or "they all do that" hogwash.

Jerry what is the new idle speed

According to the H-D videos, it is 850.  Supposed to be another way to avoid heat.

My friend with the bike just got back from the dealer and they told him nothing is wrong. He said it makes a clunk going into each gear. He has never had a Harley with a Hydraulic clutch so I'm not sure if he is wrong or not. Either way he is just going to live with it. He will look to see if he can find another dealer to test ride one.

FWIW: I agree with the early posters. Drain the HD SYN Fluid and replace it with Redline. MOST of those noises will be greatly reduced.

Enjoy the new ride.

I thought the 2017 did not make the clunk the 2016 did.

The 2017 I rode made the noise in every gear change. It was a little  annoying. But the stock bike is so quite and there is no lifter noise either. Thought maybe it would go away with break in? Who knows

I've ridden a couple 17s in addition to my new 17 CVO Limited and they all have a more 'positive' gear engagement when shifting from first through all the gears. I do not notice anything amiss or even remotely sounding like gears clashing or any metallic noise. Dropping from neutral to first after a cold start is much quieter than my previous bikes. Unless there is some really troublesome sound I think this is normal.

The dealer told my friend if he put in Redline oil it would void his warranty. He lives in Florida. The dealer in Virginia sells Redline oil.

Your friend needs to report this dealership to Harley corporate and Uncle Sam.  Harley used to make similar stupid statements before they got pulled up by the short hairs by dear Uncle many years ago.  You can use any maintenance products you want, as long as they meet the minimum requirements.  Since a real gear oil meets much tougher standards than the motor oil Harley puts in the trans, I'm pretty sure he doesn't need to worry about voiding anything.  He does need to find a different dealership though.  I personally have a real problem doing business with lying POS types, and if everyone would avoid these clowns they would either change their ways or find a new business.
