at my wits end
« on: November 16, 2016, 01:16:50 AM »

I have an 86 Wide Glide with evo, 4 speed and a kicker. I have noticed since my clutch cable broke (or possibly cut) and replaced that I have a strong pulsation in the clutch lever. Clutch plates, basket t.o. bearing, primary chain, push rods and adjuster have been replaced in the last 6 months, so now am wondering if it may be the compensator. There is wear on the teeth, I also get a clattering when shifting and when releasing the clutch while rolling. When I start from a dead stop the pulsation makes me hop. I'm not a new rider, just new to HD, and getting tired of throwing parts at it hoping to fix it.

If the pressure plate is not torqued properly you will get that type of pulsation. At least you can check that for free.

I grew up riding on Shovelheads. If all parts in clutch and basket have been replaced. Double check the clutch plates were installed in the proper order and no missing spacers. It seems to me your clutch is dragging  that causes the pulsation that you feel. Try readjusting the clutch cable so the there is only a small gap between the hand clutch lever and handlebar mount.

Did you do the work? Was the reverse left hand thread tightened to correct torque? Did you loose any roller bearings lost during assembly?  All clutch springs same tightness?  Measure the space between the pressure plate and spring plate, should be all the same. Proper tension on primary chain?  Private message me if needed and I will give my cell number so I can be more help.

My bag. 86 is a EVO that came out in 85 I think. Older clutches are similar.

Update; I found that the problem was the right push rod which was mushroomed and the shift finger had grooves worn into it. Once I replaced those parts the pulsation, clanking, and jumpy pull outs are gone.

Good. Glad you fixed it and it was inexpensive too!
