Baker +1 FLH Oil Pan
« on: June 01, 2017, 07:39:12 PM »

I am in progress of updating 98 Road King.  HD no longer makes 94-98 EVO FLH Oil.   34740-94. I originally wanted a Rivera Primo Power Drive 6 speed O.D. transmission. I had to get a gearset. I also about the S&S T124 LC, some run hotter than others. I ordered a HD oil cooler but I thought I needed more to help with cooking.
I also ordered  a Baker Plus 1 oil pan  BD-5QTB-EVO. Has anyone used the Plus 1 or the Plus 1.5 oil pans. Do they work as advertised and worth the 500 for the cast pans?

I have a friend who has one of the +1's on a '04 E/G. He bought it when they first came out. He also has a oil temp gauge, I can not remember the #'s off the top of my head but the oil temp on the gauge is much lower than before. I think some of this has to do with the way the Baker routes the oil upon return from engine which supposedly means you get a more accurate reading of the actual temp of the oil.
He would buy another one in a heartbeat. Me, not so sure, lot of money for a quart of oil.

Yeah it is a lot for one extra quart,  but that extra oil will help keep the motor cooler. If that equates to less heat on me that's cool. LOL
My new motor is ready to install but waiting on a few expensive items. It may not be as fancy as a new bike but it will be faster and maybe last longer.  It's definitely lighter than the new bikes.

These oversized oil pans as significant cooling devices always make me smile a bit.  Stop for a moment to consider the processes involved.

The engine runs and produces heat.  The amount of oil does not change that.  Due to the many factors (internal and external) the engine is going to produce some given amount of heat.  Adding a greater volume of oil won't lower the combustion temperatures.  Given the amount of oil that is different here it will take the greater volume of oil some measurable amount of time longer to reach max temp.  But given enough time on the road the max temp for that day's and bike's environmental factors will be the same.

A sending unit in the heat sink that that is the oil pan is a bit of a chimera anyway.  It's good; so long as you recognize you should be comparing one run to another not one hardware environment to another.

Don't get me wrong.  There are benefits to a greater volume of oil.  It's just that significant engine cooling from the difference between 3.5 to 4 quarts in one pan and 4.5 to 5 in another isn't appreciably one of them.
