Rookie mistake with Cruiser cradle wheel chock?
« on: May 15, 2017, 09:36:40 AM »

I purchased the cruiser cradle wheel chock to make it easier to hold bike upright in the garage....thought it would be more efficient use of space.  Not sure what i did wrong but bike was upright for hours....but....i heard what sounded like boxes falling down in my garage.  It was the bike.  Minor scratches on bottom of saddle and bike guard....and my throttle might need to be adjusted or fixed...I'm wondering if i just had it situated incorrectly?  Or am i supposed to drill the chock into the floor for stability.  I thought it was supposed to hold the bike up as is.....i took the bike out for a few hours just to get my mind right again...i was crushed :-). Throttle seemed to be a tad bit off....but I'll get the paint touched up later this week.  Just wondering about how that chock is supposed to work

Rookie mistake with Cruiser cradle wheel chock?

I use a wheel chock regularly to clean and work on my bike and have never had any issues or cause for concern. It is not bolted to the floor as I use it inside and outside of the garage. It is not the same as yours though (see picture). Sorry to hear about your bike.

Did you strap the front wheel to the chock for storage (step 4)? Did you adjust the cradle to your wheel size per the instructions?

Mounting the Motorcycle on Wheel Chock
1.
Place the wheel chock directly in front of or behind the motorcycle.
2.
Align the wheel with the center of the cradle.
3.
Push or drive the motorcycle onto and over the cradle until the tire rests against the front stop.
4.
When servicing or storing the motorcycle, secure the wheel to the front stop with an appropriate strap or cord. Route the strap around the front stop and through the wheel.

WARNING
Properly tie down motorcycle when transporting. Failure to secure properly can cause motorcycle to tip or fall which could cause death or serious injury. (00617c)
5.
If the wheel chock is installed on a trailer or truck, secure the motorcycle using appropriate tie-downs or straps.

Is this Cruiser Cradle just a Condor chock with a HD decal on it?  I have and use three Condors on three different motorcycles, and do not use straps or have them mounted.  If the cradle is adjusted correctly, the bike will not fall.

The HD website says "Cruiser Cradle holds the bike in place without straps "

Which hole do you have the adjustable cradle in?  It should be 1-2 away from all the way back.  The piece on the upright that the front of the tire goes in should be mounted as high it can be.

I think you nailed the problem.  Not supposed to need strap.  The one on harley website.  The more expensive one.

I have been using Condor stops for almost 10 years now. Just ride in, leave it in 1st and get off. NEVER had any kind problem, never tie it down or would not consider bolting the unit to my floor. also have one in my trailer and while at Sturgis etc I use the trailer for a "garage" at night, once again, just ride in and get off leaving the bike supported by the chock.
Maybe you have the "shoe" mounted in the incorrect hole on base.
Did have a buddy somehow stop short, before the "shoe" had settled to the front. He got off with it in mid stroke and a couple hours later the shoe rolled to the rear and bike fell over. Not the stops fault, his for not paying attention.

My Condor is mounted to the garage floor as it makes it easier for me to get it out, I don't use any strap but do leave it in gear.

If the bike is hard to get out, the piece that snaps up and holds the rear of the tire needs moved a hole or two forward.  That piece should not rest on the ground, it should be an inch or two above the ground when adjusted properly.  Bike rolls right out then.

The adjustment is critical, and I'd recommend people follow the directions that come with the chock.  Move the cradle too far forward and the bike can roll back on it's own.  Move the cradle too far back and it will be difficult to roll the bike back.  And the upright also figures into how the chock works.  Adjusting one part can also affect the other part.  Take the time to follow the instructions and then double check everything.

Dont need straps if properly adjusted.  Also not mentioned, bike has to be perfectly straight. Cant have wheel turned any amount.

Lessons in life.  We all take our turn somewhere along the way......just most of us don't admit it on the net. Happy for you that it was only minimal damage.   :nixweiss:

How far did you travel after you heard the "boxes" fall?

If you're not wanting to mess with tie down straps, might want to look at the Biker Bar.....  https://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=79634.0

I literally travelled straight to the garage.  But on the bike I've ridden about 40-50 miles to test controls while I get touch up paint in.  Probably gonna get my throttle checked

Sorry to hear of your mishap.

For my money there is not a better wheel chock than WheelDock, and there is no need to bolt it to the floor as it is very stable just as is, although you can if you wish.
