Baffle packing
« on: July 07, 2017, 04:10:49 AM »

Did the fullsac pipe and baffle about 20k miles ago. What is the life expectancy of the packing? What sound change indicates a need to replace?

If you installed these http://fullsac.com/product/2006-2017-cvo-perforated-muffler-sleeves-techmat-blankets/ when installing the cores, you should be fine, tech mat is high temp product that lasts

I did use those screens in conjunction with the stock insulation mat

Tech mat lasts much much longer than the stock wrap

I understand, but I didn't use tech mat and so I'm asking the original question about the life expectancy of stock matting. I don't think tech mat was being sold by Fullsac when I purchased my set up. I do remember in my directions from fullsac being directed on how to use the stock mat with the screens. I don't recall them trying to sell itech mat to me and I'm very much the type to do things only once especially for such a small amount of additional money.

I guess I will just take it apart and inspect it. Was just wondering from the crew here if there was a general understanding of stock mat life expectancy. That would save me the aggravation of taking it apart especially when my free time is limited.
Thanks!

I replaced mine in May this year after the original install with OEM blanket back in Jan. 2015, there was almost nothing left but the screens when I went into mine. I used half of the OEM stuff back then. Pretty sure I went too long!

Exact same results here. Just repacked mine with the rest of the stock packing. I'll check it again next year and get the tech mat if need be. Not a time consuming job but even an hour wrenching is less time on the bike.

Hi JPSwino,

Having Sunday morning coffee browsing CVO posts wanted to give my exp. w/ packing and new mufflers for what it`s worth. Bought 2 sets of V&H mufflers/ headers different styles on two different motorcycles the ex. sound got louder in a few thousand miled did not log the miles, but an estimate 2000-2500 miles aproximatly combination in town and highway miles and i`m not a high rpm`er.

Used various types of packing in my former dirt bike racing years (20 +) (4 stroke) and found 00 steel wool from a hardware store lasts 20% longer over the name brand "fiberglass style packing, maybe 5% louder than fiberglass" type packing. A lot of products stuff out there, but it all burns out  and needs servicing. just my experinces hpe this helps some.

Thanks! Sounds like after my 20k miles now it would definitely be worth repacking. Probably nothing left in there. Will order the tech mats from fullsac. Their DX pipe and baffles are treating me well, might as well spend more money with them. Cheers!

I'm probably in the same shape as OP.  Put mine in about 20k miles ago and now 1.75 inch baffles sound like 2 inch.  I used the original packing with screens and often find threads of original packing around the end tube of the baffle core so I know its working its way out.  For now I'm just running the smaller baffle but may eventually repack with tech mat.

I'm noticing a more metallic sound with upper rpm revs which makes me believe the packing is getting light. I'm thinking a deeper more full sound used to be there
