Alternator/Regulator needed for 600 watt Audio Systems
« on: June 27, 2017, 04:50:51 PM »

I was wanting to use the Shockwave AQ-AD600.4 amplifier with 600 watt marine amp.  It has a 40 amp fuse. If you look at that then add the lights, ignition and other items you quickly run out of charging capacity to the Yuasa GYZ32HL 32 and hr  battery with 500 CCA..
I see some single and some three phase charging systens.
This for my 98 Road King.  Thanks

Instead of getting into a long and complex explanation of "why," let me just bottom-line it:  A 3-phase (3P) charging system delivers a higher constant level of power than a single-phase system.  This means less stress, better efficiency, and longer life for the 3P and the amplifier.  3P delivers the power better to the load (the lights, stereo, ignition, and battery when charging; heated gear?).  I strongly recommend 3P over 1P.

With the engine shut off, the 32 amp-hour battery won't power that stereo for very long, especially if you are playing at high volume...and it's not a deep-cycle battery, so draining it to dead repeatedly will make it permanently dead.  Remember also that the charging system makes very little power at low RPMs, and the engine has to be at 3000 RPM or so to get the full "rated" output of, for example, 50 amps.

Only echo what's been said on the three phase choice.  Wondering aloud on the options though.  I've done several pre-06 bikes using the stator, stator bolts, rotor and regulator that were used on 06 touring bikes.  The only piece that is 06 specific actually is the rotor.  The others are 06-08.

Have only done that particular set of parts swap on earlier Twin Cams though.  Never had the opportunity to see if they'd fit an Evo.  The few times have done a three phase upgrade on an Evo always used the Cycle Electric kits.  Now I'm curious if the Twin Cam parts would fit.

I am replacing all light bulbs with LED to reduce power used. I found a amp from Aquatic AV.  It's  a smaller Multimedia Amp 288 Watt amp at a great price to go with the Infinity PRV350 multimedia receiver.  http://www.aquaticav.com/where-to-buy/online-store/marine-products/marine-stereos/bluecube-hide-away-marine-stereo-aq-bc-5bt/
