Did Harley Upgrade cam chain tensioners?
« on: July 12, 2017, 10:18:40 AM »

A mechanic told me that in 2007 or 2008 that HD upgraded the cam chain tensioners and eliminated the need to inspect them periodically. Is this true? My CVO is a 2009.

Thanks/Sinker

Correct in that the system was improved.  Incorrect in that they would never need to be looked at.  It's still a sacrificial wear item.  It still needs to be checked because of that.

One of my bikes is gear drive.  The other uses the newer style hydraulic tensioner discussed here.  On my service spreadsheet it's already marked in they get replaced the winter after they roll over 35,000 miles.  They're just too cheap and too easy to do not to be at least a little cautious with them.
