Help - Dry Mainshaft Seal
« on: February 27, 2007, 09:19:31 AM »

I'm looking for advice on this one.

As my epic bolt replacing saga got deeper, I decided to replace the transmission to engine bolts which required removal of the inner primary. So, while the black one was off, I replaced it with a chrome unit.  :2vrolijk_21:

As I was finishing up one evening, and all the hidden bolts were replaced, I mocked it up just to see how all the shiny stuff would look, and then quit for the night. The next afternoon, I proceeded to do final install. I never took everything off, just bolted all the pieces on.  :(

It came to me in the middle of the night, that I had never greased the main seal when I slid it all together for mock-up. I never did a total tear-down before final assembly.

I'm debating whether or not I need to tear it all down to grease the seal, or just go for it and tear it down later if the seal fails and it starts to leak. :nixweiss: The cost either way is almost the same, the only difference is primary fluid.

I'm thinking my only liability is the chance of a drippy inner primary. Am I missing something more catastrophic?

Question #2. If I do decide to tear it down, could I get away without buying all of the gaskets? :confused5: The bolts aren't a real issue, but that $35 gasket is pricey if I don't REALLY have to replace it.

Thanks in advance for your input,

Chief

And how much did all the bolts cost (even the ones that you'll never really see anyway)?   :huepfenlol2:

Screw it.  I'd run it and see if it dripped.  If it doesn't break you don't have to fix it.  And I've been known to reuse a primary gasket when need or frugality seemed to suggest it.  Again, if it does leak you're not out anything extra.  Just pop the cover real quick then replace it.

Stop It! No logic allowed. Actually, they're not hidden. You can see them if you use a flashlight and mirror.

Don't let them give you a hard time I'm probably one of the worse when it comes to "Stealth" chrome. When it's there we know it is, and we sleep better at night, and that's all that matters. ;) ;D

Right on d00d. That's what I do when I want to see the ones on the transmission pan. Although some of those are actually visible standing up. It's just that little bit of sparkle to catch your eye.

"What's that down there? No way. Got to be kidding me, transmission pan too? Sick man, very sick man."

This also means I now need to clean the transmission pan bolts. Welcome to the 8 hour detail.

Chief, I really admire those of you with that level of dedication.  Same thing with the guys at the car shows that maintain things in trailer queen status but still drive them in.  But while I like to keep them looking good, I am satisfied with "good."  Just can't make myself get to the level of detail that you enjoy (or endure).  That's ok though.  I can always admire yours just to see what I'm missing  :2vrolijk_21: .

Actually, I don't know how long I'll be able to maintain. I took a lot of chit about my 99 that it wasn't meticulously detailed. Actually, after the 05 trip to Sturgis, it sat on the lift in the garage for several months before ever getting washed. I didn't ride for several months with everything else going on at the time. I used to hear "Are you EVER going to wash that bike?"

I am making a major attempt to make this ride more special than the '99, in the hopes that I may find more desire to wash it. I rode the '99, and it looked it. It was maintained a lot better than it was detailed. But man did it look good when I finally did wash it, night and day difference.

We'll see how it goes. Maybe if it starts off prettier, I'll keep it prettier. Probably not, but no harm in trying something new.

Chief I will bet it won't leak. Also if you tear it back down unless you rip the gasket it will be fine. I don't want to say how many times mine has been off and I have never used a new one after the first replacement.

Also I hope you used loctite. Blue on the bolts.

THE DAWG

Thanks DAWG. I'm all over the loctite. I'm also using that instead of anti-seize for all of the stainless. Big problems if you don't use something.

By the way, has anyone besides me noticed how sweet loctite tastes? It's like Nutra Sweet. Go ahead and think I'm nuts, but that artificial sweetener stuff was discovered by mistake. Someone tasted some chemical and viola sacharin!

I found this out, I know you're wondering, when I put some on a bolt and blew on the threads to help it spread around the surface to get it all the way around the bolt. I guess a little bit of it splattered and got on my lip and I wound up with a micro-drop in my mouth. It is very sweet.

I now use a little brush to spread it around.

DISCLAIMER: LocTite has some pretty bad stuff in it, and should not be tasted. Do not try this at home, although I'm willing to bet someone on here just won't be able to resist. :huepfenlol2:
