88 to 96 upgrade?
« on: February 17, 2007, 05:54:43 PM »

Can a 88 cu in twin cam motor be upgraded to a 96 cu in motor (as in the stock 96 cu in motor)???  A friend of mine asked me this today, and I have no idea if this works or not?

I know you can go from an 88 to 95, and from 95 to 103, and from 96 to 110, but don't know if you can go from 88 to 96??  :nixweiss:

I think he is eyeing up a 96 upgrade kit on Ebay...

ok...now I have looked on Ebay at what he wants to bid on.  It is not a 96" kit, it is take-offs from an 07 Street Glide...heads, pistons, jugs, etc.  I have no idea if these parts are compatible with an 88 cu in motor.... :nixweiss:

You could make a 96" out of an 88", but I have no idea why you'd want to. The 96" motor has the same flywheel/rods as the 103" and 110" and the same cylinders as the 88"  To make a 103" out of a 96", you install the same cylinders you'd use to make a 95" out of an 88" To make an 88" into a 96" you'd have to change the flywheel/rod setup and leave the cylinders alone. The 96" motor has more torque than the 95" motor because it has in essence " stroker " flywheels. Having owned a stock 07 96" and ridden many an 88" that had been bumped up to 95' trust me on this one, it'd be a huge waste of money. If you're going to pull your motor and crack the cases, go all the way and build a 113" If not, be happy with a 95" There's a lot of em out there that can run down a 103" CVO and feed it dust. Depends on how you build the motor. Hope this all made sense.

A 4-3/8" crank is required to go from the 88" to a 96".  However, the stock 2007 crank (PN: 23729-07) is a new design that will only retrofit to 2006 Dyna models. If he doesn't have a 2006 Dyna, he will require PN 23728-07 to make the change.  If he is going to all that trouble he might as well add the big bore pistons and cylinders for a 103" or have the cases bored for a 113" or 117" build.

Yeah, BB, I hear you there...I can't imagine why he wants to do it either...a ton of work for not much return.  If I am going to dig that deep into the motor, I am coming out with something special - not just 88 to 96...

Agree, with the guys above, if your going to tear into the bottom end of your motor, you might as well go for at least 103". If you don't want to get into your cases, you'll have to settle for a 95"!

I just went with the AMS KB pistons and juggs.
Their kit is 96.5", up from HDs 94.5" SE kit.
Couldn't he do that and keep his bottom end intact?

AMS??????? :nixweiss:

These guys. Tom and Steve.

http://www.automotivemachine.com/terms.htm

They do great headwork. I have a set. They also sell a KB piston/jugg combo with 96.5 displacement.
Real good guys to work with if you want a torquey dependable bagger build.

Hi, I did this with my Heritage Springer and took the bike to Stage 3,  It included SE (6200) ignition, pipes, 42ml flatside carb, High Compression Pistons, cams, Pushrods, I can't remember if there was anything else but I had loads of problems due to Harley not recognising the pressure on the flywheel and gears, consequently it was always breaking down BECAUSE it needed either a heavy duty starter motor or Decompressors (which is the way I went) and I never had any further trouble.
Was it worth it - absolutely, I'm married to a fat lass so I needed the additional TQ rather than HP, it eventually ran great.
Good luck - it is a costly way of doing things.
