TPMS
« on: July 26, 2017, 08:43:17 PM »

Hi all. Question about the TPMS. Went to go for a ride ( '17 CVO FLHXSE ) and my front tire showed 32 psi. ( parked in garage with "cold" tires ) I got a prompt in the radio and the yellow light in the dash gauge. So, out of curiosity, I decided to go for a ride and not top off the pressure. Reason being, I wanted to see if when the tires heated up, and the pressure increased, would the warning go away? After maybe 10 miles or so, the front pressure was now reading 36 psi. Both front and rear increased 4 psi.
Warning did not go away. When I got home, I dug out the owners manual, but it didn't say anything about resetting, other than to fill tire to proper pressure. I believe it should reset automatically. Today, before I went on a short ride, I topped off the tire to 36 psi. My warning is still there, but it now shows the correct pressure reading of 36 psi.
Maybe I just didn't drive far enough, ( only maybe 5 miles each way ) Bike did sit for about 1 1/2 hours after the 1st 5 miles, but I still have the yellow light and the radio screen warning. Any ideas? Maybe to the dealer? Only 300 miles so far, so maybe I'm missing something. Plus, pretty odd that after a month I had lost 4 psi. I'll have to keep an eye on the pressure to see if maybe I have a small leak somewhere.

Mine resets as soon as you turn on the ignition (2016 SESG) which I thought was strange because dealing with cars, you normally have to drive some kind of distance. Also I believe mine increases about 4PSI as the tires warm up.

On my new to me 2017 Street Glide, I'm having the same issue. Tire has air, but the code is still thrown and warns me at every startup.

The first year they offered TPMS there were a lot of sensor failures.  It appears from the posts here that they still haven't fixed the problems, which isn't exactly surprising to me.  For all those posting about the system not resetting, contact your dealer AND H-D corporate.  Just one more of the long list of technologies borrowed from the auto industry that Harley didn't get right.  Lord help them if they had to actually invent any of this stuff themselves.

TPMS doesn't tell you the tire pressure is low per say, it tells you that there has been a loss of air from a set point meaning if it is set to since air at 36 psi, and you put 38 its fine, but if it loses 3 pounds (or what ever Harley has set for the loss) and is below the set point it will light up until you add air. The temperature expansion is not additional air. This also means, that if you set it at 36, it may not turn on until it loses the minimum so if 3 pounds it would have to get to 33 before it would light to meet both parameters.

At least this is my basic understanding.  :drink:

I'll add a little air and see what happens. It's already full enough for me though. Does HD have to pull the wheel off to replace the TPMS sensor (I'm guessing so)?

I was able to stop by the dealership today. Hooked it up to the computer and did a reset. All good now. Working as it should.

To replace the sensor Harley does need to pull the tire. The rear sensor on my 16 sg stopped working and was replaced under warranty, and they did have to pull the tire and unmount it from the rim.

Yea, that's what I did. The sensor alarm finally stopped. So now when my tires warm up I'm at 42-43 PSI.

Like you, I keep the tires on my 2020 CVO Limited 2 pounds over at 38 front and 42 rear. Today after some miles on the freeway, the rear sensor just said H (high). After going onto a side road, it cooled off and read 49. Guess when it hits 50 psi or more, it just reads high?
Anyone else notice that?

I get the message when the bike sits for a while.   I usually inflate the front to 38 and the rear to 40 cold. Then the warning light goes out.   Both on the 16&19s.       Stuart.

yup, mine a 16, the tire symbol lights up and get two hash marks instead of a number. I just keep riding on then goes back to reading 51 or 52.  :nixweiss:

Tires cold I put 38 in the front & 42 in the rear.  Bike rolling out of the garage TPMS says 39 front & 43 rear.  After tires warm up - depends on how far & how fast & ambient temperature & is usually 15 minutes+ time on road - TPMS reads 43-44 on front & 49-50 on rear.  Never had the "H' or Hi warning.

Not unusual to lose 4# tire pressure in a month depending on ambient temperatures.  Constant temps = little variance.
