New shocks...
« on: December 08, 2004, 12:52:11 PM »

Are the differences in the 412's and 440's really that great..??

I'd like to order a set of new shocks, and have read folks impressions of the 440's, but haven't really understood the difference in them. I know there's the "new" damping technology (Inertia sensitive and velocity sensitive damping),  but is it really that big of a difference where it makes the 412 almost obsolete?

Does the 412 require tools to adjust where the 440 dosen't..??

Significant difference in price as well...

I have used both (not on my SEEG) on a 2001 wide glide the only difference I noticed was the emptyness in my wallet [smiley=laugh.gif].
No bull save your money buy the 412's
you will have to remove your bags to adjust either shock and the the 412's do need one of those special wrenches they provide you with the shocks.

O'FDR must have hit his head. The 440's with the i.a.s.  technology are so far ahead of any normal gas shock tech it is not comparable. The ability to adjust and compenstate does not exist in the 412 shock asm. It is just a normal aftermarket shock. Better than oem but not in the same league as the i.a.s. 440.
I have the HD 440's on mine, they are wonderful. Have the Edelbrocks I.A.S. units on the Firebird (Edelbrock owns the I.A.S. technology) and intend to put a set on the Envoy as soon as they are available.
My 2 cents.

Maybe I did hit my head I'm not sure, but my ass didn't feel any different with 412's (for about 10k) or 440's (for about 13k) and handling was absolutely no different. Their is one advantage you get for your extra $200 that's the lifetime warranty. I also agree with magoo that anything would be an improvement over stock (my back teeth hurt just thinkin' bout them air shocks) Now if money is not an object start thinkin' about Works Suspension they will build the shocks specifically for you.

I watched the Works folks "build" shocks to meet the persons spec's on Speed. A guy with assorted springs in assorted bins, that appeared, to me, to be Very mixed up does not constitute custom shocks (whatever that is). I had a much higher opinion prior to viewing the show. A buddy of mine had them on his softail and loved them, then after the Speed TV show, he said he felt a real pain, from the "Screwing" he took when he paid the extra money for Juan to fumble around and "custom make" his shocks. He still did like them though until he bought the Legends Air Unit. That I must say is a smooth deal, just very expensive.
