BIKE TOOK A CRAP.........at 82k...need some (advice-help)
« on: September 24, 2024, 10:58:26 AM »

Gentlemen, Ladies.......Softail (balanced) engine block unique to us......

Just short of my 77th birthday (got bike for my 60th) this thing came to a good luck bad luck ? rest.

Just replaced the Chinese starter with HD's new chrome job.
Went to start bike and all Hell broke loose.....

The engine oil all (but 10 ? oz) had gone into block while resting & created a hydraulic resistance
to starting but turned over very slowly, much slower than usual because of the failed ACR's.
Learned yr's ago how to start this thing with a fractional hit of the start button.
(have new ACR's from HD just made avail.) Planed on installing before parking for winter.

Monitored oil levels at all end of day stops in garage after 10-15 min settle time & noticed level
dropped after half hour & recently not on stick in an hr ?

Did an oil change to find the 10oz ? in tank which explained the hydraulic situation.

When replacing oil filter witnessed large pea sized carbon deposits on old filter which I eventually
came to the conclusion had to come from under the pistons from the flushing action of overfill.

Anyone out there know of this situation (hydraulic) and can offer suggestions on how to proceed
on draining & flushing the block without a teardown & just replacing/repairing oil pump unit ? ?

THANKS IN ADVANCE.........Jack   :beatdeadhorse:

How many miles on the bike Jack ? (Sorry EDIT , just saw that info in the thread title. 82K miles well That's 132,000 Kilometres)

Sounds like maybe oil pump or valve drainback problem ?

Here in Australia , this sump oil scenario resolves pretty quick on startup indeed the oil pump is designed to scavenge the crankcase is it not ?

I have not yet seen your exact described symptoms , but have seen twincams that show zero oil on dipstick after having been stood a while.

That's months , not hours.

It will be interesting to find out whatever discoveries you make.

Thought I removed this CRAP post a few days ago.
Seems this is not that unusual for this issue.
Already inside crank case & working a very tight cam support/oil pump unit out.
Noticed some info on tolerance differences starting with the 2007 model twin cams.
Really not available to continue with this post as I need to put this thing away for winter.

thanks anyway...... J
