GT6.5 to GTS
« on: July 24, 2025, 02:27:50 PM »

As there are now a number of used GTS radios available, I wondered about getting one to upgrade mine. Couple of questions for anyone who has done the swap:

Does the CB still work with the GTS?
Can you use existing wired headsets?
Do you really need the replacement USB cable, or does the one that's already there work?
Does Android Auto work?  Wirelessly, or plugged in to the USB?
I see that to use CarPlay without a WHIM, there's a cheap plug available - is that also necessary for Android Auto?
If you fit one that was out of an Ultra, does it still need married to the bike by the dealer?
Any other gotchas?

I'll try and answer some of your questions. I bought a brand new GTS and also the WHIM (wireless headset interface module) for my 2016 CVO streetglide to replace the GT. For me the swap was plug and play. I don't know if the plug in type headset would work but I don't see why not. My WHIM eliminated the wired. I had to have the bike flashed to show GTS and wireless. All other connections, USB, GPS, etc connected right up to new GTS. I never used the CB so I don't know. I took the xm series module out of the GT unit and installed it in the GTS  unit no problem.

Android auto works wired.

Thanks - guess it would go wireless with one of the AA wireless adapters.  If you are say listening to a radio station, and using Waze (or similar) on AA, do the instructions mute the radio?

I had wired AA. I ran a USB cable out of the back of the small cubby tie wrapped to my handle bars. Phone mount to handle bars then plugged phone in. My AA would automatically start when I plugged in my phone. I used AA for GPS using Waze, for music using Pandora. As well as sending and receiving phone calls, texts a d what's app texts too. I adjusted the settings in the radio if I wanted to hear turn by turn GPS instructions or no.

If I remember correctly it does mute the radio with the turn by turn.

Thanks both.  I guess its fine with the upgraded amp on the CVOs?  Nothing additional needed for that?

You will need to have it flashed to Boom or Boom2...whichever one you have. The radio needs to signal the amp(s) to turn on.
