Apple iTunes to MP3 Conversion
« on: April 16, 2007, 01:29:34 PM »

For all you Electronic Gurus,

I have the Garmin 2720 with the XM Radio MP3 Player. I have the XM Feature all figured out and I actually have it working with no problems.

I now would like to download my iTunes Library from my desktop to the MP3 Feature into the Garmin, or from my iPod into the Garmin? How do go about changing the files so I can load it into the Garmin?

Please, please oh mighty ones enlighten me. :apple: :cherry:

Thanks

GG...in your itunes software there should be a conversion option which allows you to select the songs you want to convert, put them in a list, then convert to MP3 and save.

In your iTunes library, highlight the song you want to convert, then go to "Advanced" in the tools, then "Convert to MP3".  Once this does the conversion, all you have to do is drag the MP3 file to your Garmin.  I think you will find this pretty easy to do once you try it.  Let me know if you still have any questions.  Good luck.  I love having my MP3 on the Zumo. :2vrolijk_21:

Leo, when you get it figured out you'll need one of these great holders for it too..............oh, I thought that if you have iTunes that you bought off the website, you couldn't convert them to an mp3.  Although there is some discussion about allowing it in the future.

Roger,

Roger,

Now talk about a set of speakers, you can put each one in your ear and hear youself go off in stereo.

The music I want to put on my Garmin are on my iPod and in my iTuned on my desktop.

My advanced drop down has "Convert to AAC" and convert to ID3 Tags, no convert to MP3. Am I safe to assume that convert to AAC means the same as to conert to MP3?

Also, rather than try to import each single sing, can you simple hold CTRL and drag mouse down the list?

TIA,

Download MediaMonkey and start there.  It can make m3u playlist files, which are the only ones a Zumo sees.  You can also convert all types of music files to mp3s.  I'm in the process of converting them over, and you can download and tag each music file with the album art, which shows up on the screen...

Are you using the standard or the gold version?

my ITunes told me to stuff it...that the particular songs i wanted to convert didnt start as MP3s and therefore couldnt be MP3s...
i gave up and moved on to the next task..but will the monkey thing solve that?

my 2820 only has like 512 mem available so.. dont think it'll hold a lot of music anway

Burn the iTunes AAC files to a CDROM then rip them to MP3 via any CD ripping program out there.  Do it all the time.

Doc,
Thanks. This is not my area of expertise on computers, however I have a young kid that does this on a regular basis. If I do decide to get this and have questions I'll definitely send you a PM. I did find Media Monkey and the price ($19.95) for the gold version wasn't bad at all. I'll have to see what kid is using and if it's capable of doing the things I need before getting Media Monkey.

Geezer,

Seems like you have a solution with the Monkey.  As for your drop down in your library, AAC is the format that itunes uses and has to be converted to MP3 for you to use in your Garmin.  Perhaps a thought; how old is your version of itunes?  There are updates on the web which might give you the "convert to MP3" option on your list.  Also, as was stated, anything you purchase from the itunes store is "protected", and you can't convert, at least not now, which sucks since you purchase them :nixweiss:  Anyway, you have to have MP3 format to use in the Garmin.  Good luck :2vrolijk_21:

Can't convert in iTunes, true... but can be "ripped" to a MP3 once the song/album has been burned to a cd.
