For the fire bros here
« on: May 06, 2007, 12:04:04 PM »

My shift/company made the news twice in the past week.

On May 4th we responded to a motel fire that came in as "multiple calls of a working structure fire".
This was around 6:30 pm on a heavily traveled local highway.
My partner and I (F/F Volker) were on the 2nd due truck, the 110' Stick. The 1st due Aerialscope in the video was just put back in service about an hour before the call.

Our truck had a 7 mile run during rush hour!

Our truck was used to put personnel on the roof for a trench cut, which was to prove to be effective as the stop point. Although with an initial flow of only 95- 300 GPM it almost didn't work. Once the ambulance was found that was "PARKED" on the 5" supply line to the engine, we were able to get a decent stream, but still limited to under 700 GPM (1500 GPM capable nozzle).

Thanks guys.

We don't do it for the accolades, but our town rarely ever recognizes the efforts of our FD, so when there is finally some type of recognition is is certainly appreciated and in the end a big deal.

My partner on the Truck has been on the job for 30 years and that is his first ribbon. And it is certainly not because it is the first time he did something. Just the first time someone took the effort to put it on paper and submit it.

His wife was in tears because he was finally got something. Our wives "know" what we do, but they don't always know "exactly" what we do, if they did we would probably have to either quit or get divorced.

But they all "listen" when the guys are talking after a big job about who did this - who did that, and they hear way too much. So they know that many actions go unnoticed.

I think the wives make a bigger deal out of it then the members do, bragging rights in the neighborhood you know.

BTW, that awards ceremony was put on but our State Association, not the town we work for.

Hey Mike, The video is not TV news, just a cam guy who tags along with the photo guy in case something spectacular happens.

Here are a couple of videos shot with a digital camera (not a video cam)

Right at the end of the 2nd video you can see the smoke coming up through our trench cut and then in the last second we are making our way off the roof.

The emergency evac came about because of 2 or 3 backdrafts that took place, I don't know where they were but it shook the building. We were getting off the roof even if they didn't blow the horns!

A lieutenant preparing to take a "new guy" in. At this time we still had reports of 4 missing occupants.
Fortunately, the report was unfounded and they didn't have to go to far.
