paint issue
« on: January 04, 2006, 11:24:05 AM »

if you followthe metal grind to the bottom there is rust about an inch wide by 1mm high.
Is it worth the hassle of repair... Is it worth letting them do the disassembly.. The clear is
definately not broken, and it hasnt gotten any worse. will it cause problems in the future?

Hmmm.. if it is sealed I don't think it will get worse. But how did it get there in the first place? Was it there upon delivery? If not than more than likely moisture got under the clear and started the process. If that is the case it will get worse. I would get it replaced regardless.

If it hasn't been there from day one then it'll get worse.  Even if it's currently sealed the first tiny little imperceptible rock chip on that leading edge will unseal it and the rust will take off again from where it is.  It's not dead, just dormant (at best).

I would request that a new fender be ordered if it was there since new.   Either that or order a $25 touchup paint kit.

tunedse2,

That sure appears to be corrosion (red rust), and most definitely should not be there.  I would expect it to be repaired or replaced, since it won't get any better and the odds are it will get worse, as in the clear coat peeling.  Don't wait for the clear to pop or peel, since that might make it appear to be the result of damage and not a paint defect.

take it to the dealer you bought it from and let them order you a new fender. You paid big bucks for that bike. Doing this will help them avoid the same problem in the future, quality control!

Very good advice from everybody. Looking at the pic. the rust is on the bottom edge where it is silver and not color. That is not paint, the silver is the grind marks left by the sander, then clear over the bare metal. The instructions with the m/c say to patch any rock chips, scratches immediately with clear so it won't rust. Go to your dealer, have them order a new fender which could take 2-3 months, but you will have the bike to ride while you wait. As was said above, don't wait, you don't want them saying it was something you did. I have seen this before and chances are it will get worse. Good luck...if they give you a run around, post it on this thread, we can help you get it done.

I have the same problem with both fenders on my 06 SE2 Fatboy.  Dealer is replacing the fenders under warranty.  Looking at my tank, I have found a couple of spots where rust is starting as well.  No chips or cracks in the clear coat at all.  Looks like there was moisture in the paint, or the booth when they sprayed the clear coat.
