Installing Windshield Multi-Pouches
« on: May 14, 2007, 10:53:21 AM »

Like many of you, I really wanted to install the storage pouches that mount at the base of the windshield on the FLHT's. I had them on my old bike, but with the dash pad on the FLHTCUSE, they really don't fit well. The problem is that the windshield pad doesn't let the pouches angle down enough to EASILY fit. Oh yeah, you can CRAM the windshield on, smushing them until they fit, but I just think there has to be a better way. I think I found it.

My method does two things, reduces the amount of squishing that happens, and also makes the pouches more squishable.

First off, I wanted to make the pouches more squishable. To do this, I took a utility knife and CAREFULLY cut the end stiffeners out of all three pouches. I found that if you repeatedly score the corner creases, the plastic will fail along that line if you wiggle it back and forth. You can then fold it down into the pouch and then wiggle it up and down until the bottom edge fatigues and breaks. The rear piece is left intact, just the end pieces are removed.

This helped some, but to install them I still had to push the center of the windshield back a good bit to get the windshield holes to line up.

Second alteration was to open up the center hole in the windshield so it doesn't have to lean back so far. I got out my Dremel, and removed about 3/32, or maybe 1/4 inch of material from the TOP of the center hole. This allows the windshield to still drop over the 'post' of the inner fairing, without having to be leaned back as far as before. I don't know how much more vertical the top of the windshield is, but looking at it by itself, I can't tell any difference. It is still slanted back quite a bit.

I'll have to test this, but the only possibility of a problem would be at HOIST speed, the windshield may have a tendancy to tilt back, towards it's stock position from the wind force. It can't go any further back than stock, but there may be some movement. Time will tell. Right now, I am much happier with the pouches being a lot easier to install and I don't feel like I am doing something that is stressing the windshield attachment at the edges like the previous mounting did.

One note I may add, and that is I am using the original windshield from the '99 FLHTC since it is taller than the OEM for the CUSE. The stock windshield may have a slightly different relationship of the holes, which will affect the lean angle. I REALLY had to push a whole lot more than I was comfortable with to get the holes to drop over the 'pins'. The mods I made helped a lot.

I am switching to a Clear View, but their lead time is now 7 to 8 weeks. I needed something for the Ride to the Wall, so I decided to modifiy what I had.

I actually use the FastAire brand, need at least the 8" height to cover edges of bags, maybe that is why it fit with engineering! john

Used a dremel to grind the heads of the rivits off and moved the bags back 3/4in drilled new holes and works great no pressure on the windshield.
