So in other words, we should have a Shovelhead Heritage model FLH Electra Glide (Olive and Orange with fringed leather saddlebags) on the cover ?  Or maybe the Moo Glide ?  Or a Shovelhead Sturgis ?  Or a Daytona Dyna ?  When did it actually begin ?   H-D has always made low production model motorcycles and special commemorative Anniversary edition motorcycles. Did H-D market the FXR2 as a CVO ? I'm asking not telling or being a wise guy here

I thought that this popped up in another thread awhile back; as I think back to the middle 1960’s, I don’t recall anything special until the 1976 Liberty Edition machines. H-D had a Confederate Edition Sportster in 1977 that was very limited and I understand that it has substantial value as collectable. As I remember it, H-D introduced the first FLHS in 1977. There was a special silk screen tank graphic in 1985 on a crimson bagger that was a limited offering. The ’81 heritage of course; they are running that same olive color today. H-D had a 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial machine with a color-matched inner fairing….and the rest is a blur.

Now that I think about it, the ’71 FX Superglide “Night Train” could be considered the first Factory custom.

One of my remaining brain cells keeps insisting that there may have been a special badged Sportster in 1981 commemorating Harley’s buy-back from AMF.

And there it is; great resource, thanks for the tip. At least one of my brain cells still works! :) In reading through the history I forgot about the 3.3 gallon Sprint model C tank used on the XLS “Roadsters” from that era. That tank is the same one used on the Superglides beginning in 1973.

I agree in as much as the way you phrased this. H-D actually promoted the 71 FX as " factory custom" The term CVO did not I suppose appear until the FXR2 although H-D has produced very low production runs of certain models since it's infancy. One could list a dozen models from each era of H-D's 104 years. All of this is moot, as this site is devoted to CVO's beginning with the FXR2, so that's what our calendar should consist of.

My brother had a (US spec) XLS Roadster with that tank when we were both in Germany.  I like IronHeads. I hate FXR or Fatbob tanks on sportsters, don't care for 21" front wheels on them either.  Ruins the lines of the bike for me.

That’s right; I forgot that Milwaukee ran the FXR tank on the XL. Seems to be a bit of a styling miscue; and I thought that my taste was all in my mouth. They do say “no guts no glory”, and it must have taken someone with an ample sack to follow through on that idea. As I remember it, the FXR tank was only run on the XL in 1985.

Thanks Hoist; trying to get a little work done. Sometimes work has an annoying way of interfering with playtime.

There may be some value in considering a few of the other non CVO limited production machines as accent and filler for the calendar. A peripheral benefit would be to put Chief to work researching some of the most obscure and interesting of these; I hear that he is looking for a challenge.
