Cooling pin runout
« on: July 17, 2007, 03:19:29 PM »

I have been reading as much as I can on this site as well as anywhere I can.  This was posted on VTwin:

Another item that we use to help with cooling pinion runout is the R&R cam plate. This plate will lower oil temps, stabilize the pinion, has cam bushing ( another bright idea that hd though would work, removing the bushing!!)

Followed by:

Spoke with Reggie last week, He stated that the cam plate was almost a required upgrade on the new bikes. He felt that the removal of cam bushing ()(the cam rides directly in on the camplate) and the single row chain vs the old double silent chain are an invitation for all kinds of tolerance failures.

What are you expert guys opinions on this?

Check this out for starters: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=14726.0 It's a thick piece though, and can't be used with FatCats. It's too thick and requires their cover also. But some other exhausts work with it. GMR highly recommends it. I went with the Feuling, as I've always heard good things about them. And you know how feel about racing chit! But I was surprised to see there was no bronze bushing in the their camplate anymore either. But I'm using the FatCats and I'm committed. It looks like a really good part, but I was surprised they eliminated the bushing also.

Al-u-mini-yum has been used in plain bearings for ages. VRod cams run in plain aluminum bearings as well as numerous metric and other machines. I understand that aluminum is used in the rod and main bearings of contemporary, high performance engines.

Roller chains have been replacing silent chains in high performance automotive applications for decades. Hydraulic tensioners are able to control the roller chain with much less applied force than the earlier spring tensioned components. The hydraulic tensioners are also not affected like the spring units are by the changing loads resulting from the opening to closing ramp transition.

IMHO the changes to the late model cam plate are right on the mark; losing the cam bearings improves reliability, simplifies the assembly and reduces cost.

Losing the ball and roller bearings reduces the relative cost of production. I can’t say for sure if the new hydraulic camplate assembly costs less to produce; the three piece cams may more than offset the bearing cost.

For what it’s worth, I believe that some models did see retail price reductions.
