turn signal light melt down
« on: September 28, 2008, 07:46:40 PM »

I’m going to work Friday, pull up at a red light. It’s about 5:40am so I can see my lights in the car in front and notice my left running light is not on (left turn signal).  Turn signal worked but the running mode was out.  No biggie, these are dual filament bulbs.  I get home that evening and pull the cover off.  It looks like there was a short or something and when it blew it melted the chrome in the light housing.  You can see the burn mark right under the bulb – it’s the black…It’s like totally melted, can’t scrape it off.  I had another bulb, put it in, works fine in running and turn modes.  I’ve had bulbs go before but never a meltdown like this… This something I should be worrying about or just a bad burn out blub?

I had a similar circumstance. Mine was started by corrosion and the chrome plating eventually eat up by both heat and corrosion. You have to look close to see the damage behind the lens. It works fine with a new bulb and lens but I know the blemish exists and it will bug me until I break down and replace the whole assembly.

Most likely cause is water in the housing.  Unfortunately, the turn signal housings are not really sealed, and water can get in not only at the lens but also where the wires enter the housing.

Show this to your dealer and have him replace the housing under warranty.  Then seal the wires where they enter the housing with clear silicone, and apply a generous amount of dielectric grease to the bulb socket.

Great tip, I noticed some moister in one of my turn signals after picking it up after the 1k service from when they washed it after service.
I'll take your advice, Thanks

Do this and your lights will be a lot better off.

I've sealed both bikes turn signals with silicone where the wire goes into the light and seems to have solved the problem.

I see this every day with almost 500 School Buses under my watch (We have 1,800 of them). Just remember out there, use a rag or gloves when removing a blasted bulb (though not broken) as they are VERY fragile and will cut the heck out of you.
