Air filter comparison
« on: July 21, 2007, 08:33:12 PM »

A while back, someone posted a comparison of the more popular air filters, with cfm flows.  I did a search but couldn't find it.  Does anyone still have that data?  I have an '08 FLTR coming in Sept., and I need to start stockpiling parts.

Thanks

Bill,

I don't have the data your requesting, but you won't see any real difference on the dyno between the K&N, Ness, and Zippers replacement.   Zippers does make an extended one, but after having 2 of them fall apart due to stress on the outter plate where the standoffs attach I would caution you to stay with the stock size replacement.

I would not use the Harley one though neither the black nor the blue filter.   They fall apart to easily and are a waste of your money.

Harry, have you had a before-and-after with the filters?  Enough time with a shorter unit and no breakage to really get a firm feel that the extra length and leverage was a problem?

Twolane over the time that I have had the bikes dyno'd I did not switch back and forth as a specific test, but as dyno sheets go there were no appreciable differences in the runs that were posted here.   This is the bike we did the tests for the 575's.

I have gone through 2 of the extended's and still have the original short one on another bike, so yes I have had sufficient time on to say on my motorcyles I would not go back to an extended.

The shorter filter I put back on the same motor, now a ness filter has had no problems and has already outlasted the 2nd extended in time on the bike, so I am satisfied that the extended reach with the 04 pumpkin's air cleaner is just not a good combo for me.

All mine were put on with blue loctite.   I brought the filter down to the local Harley dealer for them to see.   I would rather give up that 1/4 inch of exposed air filter than to keep having issues.   It has cost me 2 filters, and a screaming eagle air filter, plus the cost of the new 3rd air filter which I shouldn't have had to buy.

Thanks Unbalanced
I know the info. is always here if the right person reads the question.  I was down at my local dealer yesterday and confirmed that the '08's have a 50mm tb, so now I am wondering if the aftermarket backing plates will fit?  Also confirmed that the new ECM controls cruise control, fly-by-wire throttle, as well as the standard functions of older ECM's.  Since SERT's are on indefinite backorder, and no one else will make an alternative for a while, I am scratching my head as to how I can get the AFR right after I put on a good set of pipes and a decent air filter!

Thanks Harry.  Appreciate the comparative judgements of the two.  Suppose regaining a slight bit of leg room is an extra bennie also.

Have the long filter on the red bike presently.  Still have one of the others on a shelf somewhere.  Got to clean one or the other relatively soon.  Hadn't given it a thought either way.  But for such a minor difference no reason not to heed your experience.

Bill,

I can not tell you if they changed something on the 08 throttlebodies yet that are 50mm, I will try and check the 08 parts guide that I have and see if it tells anything.

I am guessing the 08 should work with the backplate that already exists, but due to the changes in drive by wire, cant be sure.

I can tell you that the 50mm Screaming Eagle Throttlebody works with the stage1 backplate.

Thanks Harry -

Hopefully it is the same TB as the 50mm SE so all of the aftermarket air cleaner assemblies are still viable options.  My biggest concern now is the ability to re-map the AFR - I will hope that the new soon-to-be-released SERT will have that option for the 08's.  Reading all of the EPA related articles does not give me a lot of confidence that the MoCo will give us many options from here on.

Thanks again

Bill,

Your going to be disappointed.   The backplate 29510-05 chrome and 29586-06 are for 02-07 only per the parts catalog.  On page 545 top right side.

although I think you will be in luck as the 110 stage1 kit if you do a breakdown on it states that it works for the 08 model 110 and fits 49 state 08 touring models high flow air cleaner element and cvo mufflers.  They show a picture that resembles the ones above in the kit on page 517 in the middle of the page.

Do a breakdown on this kit 27800-08 and I think you may find that the part number above may work or they will tell you what the new number is.

Sorry only going by what the book says at the moment, it looks like your going to have to be the first guinea pig on this one hehe.

Harry-

I haven't received my 08 parts book yet, so I'll make a run by the dealer first of the week and get a breakdown on the 110 kit.  I have emailed K&N to see if they know if the backing plate in their RK-3909 kit will work.

If it wasn't for the Brembo's and ABS,I would stick with my '04 Road King - I built a 95 for it that runs great.

As for being the guinea pig, somebody's gotta do it - right?  You would think I would have learned in the Army to never volunteer to be first!

Thanks

Bill,

One would think you would learn not to walk point hehe.  But someone has to take one for the team.

Sorry wish I could have given ya better info's than what the moco leaves for you to decipher, but the 08's are just too new and there isn't much information available.

Please let us know what you find out.

I put one comparison sheet together last year I think and will have to see if I still have the comparison sheet on the home PC. If so will re-post or sent it to you. However, it doesn't cover anything for 2008 models specically.

Thanks Joe -

I'm starting to put together a plan for an 08 that will be here in Aug.  Waiting for the new SERT to see what the MoCo, and EPA, will ALLOW us to do to the new bikes.  Could be interesting....
