Way too quiet with the OEM exhaust so I installed V&H true duals and ovals on my '07 SEUC. Finding this setup a little too loud on the highway. How would you rate the sound level of the SE touring slip-ons ?

I found my Rineharts too loud even with the quiet baffles and packing.  I took them off and reinstalled the stock exhaust system (Stock headpipes with touring mufflers).  Ran the stock from 6700 to 25,000 miles.  I just put on V&H TD headpipes with the stock touring mufflers.  I am completely satisfied with the sound/performance.  A lot more balanced sound at idle (but not any louder), growls a little on acceleration (still not a bark like the RH's), and is quiet as stock once achieving cruising speed.  Hope this helps.

Is there any reason that these mufflers, SE Touring ( Part # 64985-07A ), won't fit on a '06 CUSE with V&H true duals?  I know that Harley says they only fit '07 and '08 models.  Do they have cats?


I use the older Touring mufflers (65259-00) on my 07 CUSE2 when I'm going on a long trip, and the SE Performance mufflers 65115-98B at all other times, both on V&H Touring Duals.  Neither of those are supposed to fit an 07, but they are fine, so I can't see why 64985-07A  wouldn't be fine too....

I use the V&H Touring Duals and the SE Touring slip ons - but the earlier ones, 65259-00 - on long trips because the SE Performance mufflers that I use the rest of the time are too loud. I'd say the SE Performance mufflers are about as loud as the ovals, but a far nicer, rounded sound.  The 65259-00 touring mufflers are not loud at all, and not that nice a sound.  I'm thinking of hammering a rod through them to make them just that little bit louder, but especially to make them a little more free-flow to help the motor's breathing, but still staying quieter than my normal loud mufflers.  (Yes, changing them over is a pain, but on 300-500 mile days, the noise of the performance mufflers gets to you after a while!).  It's worth noting that the performance mufflers (and I guess the V&H Ovals?) are much louder on a 110 motor than they are on a 103!

Interesting observation Jim.  My hearing must be shot.  I can ride all day with the Ovals and they don't bother me a bit.  In fact I like the nice rumble they have when cruising at around 70-75 mph.  I had the SE touring slipon mufflers on my 02 Ultra and prefer the sound of the Ovals over them.  Personal preferences I guess.   ;)

I guess so!  The Ovals (I have a friend with the same bike as us with them) are raucous. Just Like the Rineharts I disliked so much on my 06 CUSE.  A sharp, very loud noise.  The reason I went for the SE Performance ones on this bike is my friend with 103" FLHTCSE2 had them, and they sounded gorgeous!  A much more mellow, rounded rumble than the sharp bark of the Ovals and the Rineharts.  However, on my 110 CUSE 2, they are much louder than they were on the 103"!  (The same friend has a CUSE2 with them on too).  However, still that rounded, mellow, rumble, as opposed to the sharp, monotone bark of the Ovals and the Rineharts, but not quite so nice as they were on the 103".

So, I think more than just personal taste (though that's the biggest part, I guess!) but the fact that the same mufflers can sound different on different sizes of motor....

I would have to agree with Eqcons...  the ovals sounded great on my old 88 ci roadking but were obnoxiously loud on the 110. The 06 model SE touring pipes are perfect. (my neighbors agree with this..)  The SE touring pipes are a little louder than the stock muffs at 84dB but sound perfect.

Its all in the ears methinks....

That is interesting how the same pipe sounds totally different on bigger or smaller engines.  I never heard the SE Performance slipons that I had on my 02 on the 110 engine so I have no comparrison to base it on.  I did get a chance to hear the Ovals and the Rineharts side by side and preferred the sound of the Ovals over the Rineharts.   Like I said, my hearing could be shot.  26 years in the military can do that to ya.  ;) :P

A phenomenon I first came across in 1969. When I was a youth, "the" cool guy needed to own a Lambretta Scooter.  The one to have was the GT200 (200cc) - if you had that, you were the essence of cool.  And they had to be decked out with more chrome than a Harley these days has to have!  One of the other guys  around town had a much lesser model, an Li125 (125cc).  But he had the nicest sounding muffler in the world, known as a "split megaphone". Everybody loved this noise, and I lusted after it for my 200.  Eventually he sold the scooter, and I talked him into selling me the muffler.  Guess what?  Yup, sounded entirely different on the bigger motor, much to my disappointment. Still nice, but not nearly so nice as on the smaller motor.  Situation seems to be exactly the same on the SE Performance muffler - different sounds on the 88, the 103, and the 110, and seems to me to be at its nicest on the 103.  I guess it's all down to the bigger capacity shoving more exhaust gas per exhaust cycle down the muffler.
