Problems with gauges
« on: August 09, 2007, 07:33:27 PM »

Ok, I had my Banana since 05 and never had a bit of trouble till now.

Here are the symptoms I was riding along at 65 mph for about an hour when the speedo and the tech dropped off to zero and both the check engine light and the security light came on, looks the same as when your turn your swich and run buttons on before you hit the start button. I did not notice any other problems with the bike and all other gauges registered fine. They came back after a few miles and then started this cycle over and over at ramdom. It did seem to stop if I shifted my weight to the left of the seat.

So, I stopped at the nearest dealership and they looked it over and said it was the security module. We left the bike at this dealer for two weeks and when we picked it up all was fine for the first 500 miles but the same symptom started again.

I am going to take it back into my local dealer and have them look it over again but I would like to toss them a bone. If anyone has an idea or had the same issue it would be great to here from you.

One other clue here I noticed tonight, and I am not sure it’s related, the radio is having a hard time picking up a station on scan.

Jon

New Clue: If I have the bike running and turn the handle bars to the far left, as if I were going to set the lock, the same thing happens. Security lite comes on and tach goes to zero. When I turn the wheel back to the straight position the light goes out and the tach starts back up...

Jon;
With these systems I would bet you have a broken or damaged wire somewhere. Most likely on the main harness that runs from the fairing, under the tank, then under the seat. i would remove the tank and inspect the harness very well.

I was going to suggest the speed sensor in the transmission as a possible culprit since I think it can cause some of those symptoms, too, but after reading the "new clue," I would have to say Jim (hd-dude) is correct in his diagnosis.

As far as how the scan works on the radio, there is is a local/distant switch (far right button on the top row) which sets the sensitivity of the tuner to pick up weak signals for local stations.  When "DX" appears on the sreen, it is set to get the most out of a weak signal.  Try that out, if you haven't already.  I don't think this issue is related to the other problem.

Good luck, and let us know how everything works out.

Thanks Guys, it is the harness. I get it to do the same thing by lightly pushing on the harness about 8 inches in front of the gas tank right where it starts up into the faring.

Just found this thread, obviously you found the issue, this is where all of my problems came as well with the same symptom.  Ultimately I had more than one short and they took a long time to track down.

Hopefully yours is an obvious one.
