Spark Plug info for a 103 (what are you using?)
« on: June 26, 2012, 09:16:11 PM »

I have a 2006 SEUC and want to replace the plugs.  I know there are a lot of gimmick plugs out there with the 4 platinum tips or Split Fire etc.  I have always used a standard Bosch Platinum in what ever I was replacing but I thought I would ask what others are using and like. Or are people sticking with OEM? Please feel free to vent on trial and errors too.

Thanks in advance,

We know that the stock/OEM plugs work well with the Delphi Ion Sense combustion monitoring system which "reads" the combustion through the spark plug gap immediately after the spark was sent.  It's been reported that some of the "fancier" plugs don't work well in that respect.  I'd save my money and buy the plugs the system was calibrated for.

All the so-called performance hype is just that, hype.  There are no plugs out there that will give you an extra six horsepower, trust me.  So it comes down to how long the different types of plugs last.  Obviously platinum or iridium last longer than the plain electrode stuff.  If you plan to run your bike 50k - 100k miles between plug changes, perhaps one of those would make sense.  If you tend to actually maintain your bike and change plugs per the schedule, however, the stock $3 spark plugs work just fine.

It's the same for all Twin Cam engines.  It's a 12mm plug, and it's gapped at .040" (+/- .003).  Installation torque is 15 ft-lb (+/- 3).  I highly recommend a thin coating of high temp anti-seize compound on the threads.

Might be a good idea to back off the torque value if you lubricate the threads.  It'd be a lot tighter in the hole at 15 ft-lb "wet" torque versus a "dry" 15.
