Hot or Cold Which one for oil change?
« on: September 27, 2007, 05:47:56 PM »

My 02 manual says bring bike up to operating temps to change oil. Is this really needed or can I drain it cold. Your input is invaluable. thanks in advance,Q

John, the hot (or at least warm) oil will drain better/faster.  That's all.

Definitely hot. Drains faster and more completely. Also like mrmagoo stated you get any sediment that is laying in the bottom of case stirred up and better suspended in the oil.

John...I've always changed the oil in everything I own when it is hot/warm.  I've always held the belief that more of the bad chit in the system gets mixed in with the oil after it's been run a few minutes and therefore drains out with the oil instead of staying settled in the bottom of the pan.  If I'm changing all the holes, I will take the bike for a spin of 30 minutes or so, then come back, get her on the jack, and drain.  I think this is particularly important for the tranny when using the thicker oil like Redline.  Plus, it drains faster...

That's pretty much my routine too TC.  Just want it all to drain better.  That it drains faster is a side benefit.  We need permanant lifetime oil.  And cute girls in the SE catalog that can be hired/acquired for filter chaning duties.

Got to do mine this weekend, in fact, before riding to MV.  It's still got 1K to go (5k interval for me on engine, 10k on the other two), but I figure I might be winding the bike pretty tight up there, got a case of oil in the basement, so why not...

Cute SE girls chaning oil/filters....hmmmm, business op?

Thats what I was figuring the answer would be. Thanks Terry and Don for the assistance. I just got my Amsoil synthetic for the motor and this new Redline synthetic just for HD primaries. I also run Shockproof in the tranny. Even with oil we have OCD's. Thanks again,Q

Only difference is how fast it drains out of the pan unless you do the 5 qt change.  If you have particles that "settle out" you need to find a better filter.  The last time you shut it off whatever was in the engine stayed there.

Another good reason to do your own oil changes.  Most shops want you to leave the bike sit around until the motor is cool to the touch before they change your oil.

Another reasone to do warm is all the oil (except 4-6ish ounces) will be out of the sump. This is escpecially important on softail models....
