What's the proper way to break in a New RK "Annie" ???
« on: October 28, 2007, 06:37:24 AM »

What is the proper way to break in a new RK Custom Annie ?

The only thing the dealer stated to me was to keep in under 75 miles per hours when riding....

How about when first oil change is to be done ?

How many miles does it take to break in a bike ?

1000 mile service or how many months before first major service should be done, and anyother things I might have left out....

My dealer told me under four thousand RPM for the first fifty miles and under five thousand RPM until 500 miles.

Depends on how much maintenance you expect to do yourself. I believe a new engine oil should be changed at 50, 250, and 500miles, then go along with the owners manual. But I still cut their recommendations in half.

Different mileage for different parts of the motorcycle. The engine is basically run-in at about 1000 miles but the transmission will take longer as with some of the lower end parts of the engine. Personally, I would say that a total break-in doesn't fully take place until around 5000 miles.

1000 miles or at least once a year until the 5000 mile click-over. The owners manual gives a pretty good schedule of maintence items and a checklist. A good check-over is good whenever the bike hasn't been operated for a few weeks or when a longer ride is anticipated. Check oil levels often and tire pressures and similar until you get a feel for the kick method.

Check the glossary of your owners manual for "Break In" and there you'll find H-D recommended RPM/Speed per gear broken down into first 50 miles and up to first 500 miles.

The owners manual will also have the recommended service intervals and what should be done at each service (look in manual for "Service Intervals").

The 2 main things are . . . . don't lug the motor (keep it above 2,000 rpm) and vary the engine speed (avoid using the cruise control and stay off the 4-lanes.  Do those things and follow the max. rpm recommendations in the manual and you should be good to go by 500 miles.

The only other thing I'll add is I would not wait until 1,000 miles to change the oil.  I would get it, and the metal particles that are floating around in the oil of any new motor, out of there at 500 miles.  New filter, too, of course.

Also; cut the filter open to see what is going on in the engine. That will become a habit!

I wouldn't go over 1000 miles prior to doing the first service (the more, the merrier for oil changes).  The 500 mile break-in period is actually to acquaint the rider to the new bike, hence the ceiling speed, etc.

The 500 mile break in, done correctly , does more to seat the rings properly then anything else.
