Need Info on K&N Air Filter
« on: November 19, 2007, 01:26:26 PM »

Does K&N produce an air filter for the 2008 SE Ultra air box that fits like original equipment?  Only interested in replacing paper filter and not necessarily more air flow.

Thanks

Try the HD-1499 (direct replacement) It is the "D" shaped element.

Hello McDonald and Chief,

I have hopefully some info that might be able to help. I also am attempting to replace the stock air filter element on my 07 Ultra. The K&N stock replacement is a HD 1499 HOWEVER you need to wait for the corrected version with properly spaced breather holes per HD OEM specifications to be produced in about two weeks.

The HD 1499 has breather holes at about 4 11/16 " center to center instead of the approx 5 " required by HD OEM specs and to be able to mount the element without compressing the two rubber breather hoses. I have been battling K&N for 2 + years on this and finally two weeks ago received an email from their R&D boss acknowledging that I had been correct. They are in the process of changing the production mold and will test it at their end and then forward to me to test. FINALLY !!!.

The stock HD OEM 2008 air cleaner element is different from 07 and earlier due to a larger throttle body. Would like to have that throttle body on mine!

Not sure that K&N has the stock replacement for the 2008 as yet.

I have been using the SE 29509-06 air cleaner element as it is from the 05 SE 103 air box. Not sure if it makes alot of difference but the element composition is alittle more Hi Flow looking. Problem that developed last week with it when I checked it was that the filter material was actually gone from the bottom center pleats and the outer two corners heavily stained due to the famous oil misting that can occur. The dealer informed me that there were shipments from HD suppliers to dealers throughout the  US of defective air cleaner elements for many part #'s with the same kind of material failure due to exposure to fuel and oil. They are replacing it for me but it will only be an interim until I finally get the virtually indestructible K&N HD 1499 (NEW VERSION).

It's been a frustrating experience for the last 2 + years but the end is near. Then of course the 08 is different but hopefully they correctly spaced the two breather holes.

Hope this helps both of you.

Is this what you're seeing?

This was a known problem w/these filters. Just beware of some of the particles that are disentergrating/falling off may end up getting sucked into your motor. :nervous:

FiredOOd,

No the stock OEM air cleaner is metal front and back with a mesh screen and the filter element which is best described as thick cotton. The cotton material had actually disintegrated leaving only the mesh wire. Don't know how much street junk got sucked in but at least it's been changed for now pending the K&N HD 1499 product.

I've read about the model air cleaner you have in the picture. Is that a stock HD filter???

Not sure how to send pictures of it but I have attempted below.

Hope this helps

Ok, I know the one you're speaking of. I'm thinking it's the stock paper filter that came in mine. The one I have pictured is the Stage 1 SE Filter that came w/the Stage 1 SE A/C upgrade.

Yep.  I remember that challenge all too well.  My filter looked like that, and the metal which secured the filter to the back plate started cracking where it attached to the standoffs.  Promptly replaced with K&N HD-0800.  Then the stock air cleaner vibrated so much it cracked the filter center nut.  New air filter again.......and a new air cleaner cover.  Ain't this fun?   :huepfenjump3: :huepfenlol2:

Actually, the material on the stock "washable" element and the SE "washable" element seems to be the same cheap junk.  Neither seem to tolerate any kind of oil contamination without disintegrating.  Sure will be nice when manufacturers find another source for cheap crap besides China.

My Air cleaner cover fell off twice/totally ruining the cover second time. Went with the Zippers then put a gasket (HD) in front of filter before re-ataching the new cover. 2000 hard k's and all is still well. I originally posted a thread a few months back!!!!!!!!

Check this thread I started in September.  I asked this same question.  K&N and AMSOIL do not have any filters for 2008...yet.
