gear cams for stock twin cam, need help
« on: November 15, 2007, 11:09:02 PM »

I'm considering updating the wife's 03 Heritage to gear driven cams.  The bike has little over 33,000 trouble free miles.  Want to keep it that way.  Upgrades are: Mikuni carb and VH Pro pipe, SE air cleaner.  Don't want to get to radical just basically get the chain tensioners out of there.  My question to you motor heads extaodinaiers is.  What should I go with?  Any input is as always appreciated

Gabe;

My recommendation would be one of the 3 cams:

Andrews 26G
S&S 510G
YB12 From Freedom Cycles

All of these cams are direct bolt in and will not require any headwork and will offer a substancial increase in performance as well.

You will probably want to be prepared to change the lifters, oil pump, and cam plate while you are in there. The pump and plate may be scored from the tensioner shoe droppings.

Been around, coming in and out every now and then. Just busy with work and kids.  That ride next year sounds great.  We are planning on  a ride to the tail of the dragon then on the way back see family in Indiana then Milwaukee for the 105th.  So might not get the chance to head south for your ride, but who knows.

The 510 is not the best choice. You have a 88 inch engine that is only producing 8.9.1 compression I understand that S&S calls it a stock bolt in cam but you are going to give up a fair amount of low end tq. The andrews 26 would be a nice choice i would even advance it 2 degrees.    We just pulled a set of 510's out as the customer was unhappy about the dealer suggesting them and he lost the low end power that we had with 203 cams and his 95 inch kit. We swapped in the 26 and he love the fact that it has great low and mid range power. You are less in CI and less compression.  The 510 is in the 37 class of cams and likes to have 9.5-9.8 compression.  So with your current kit I would suggest looking at cams with a sooner closing point. Just my opinion.  AS well the 26 is a great cam if you go to 95 inch. And use the stock heads.
