40mm CV upgrade to 44mm CV for 95". Is it necessary?
« on: December 12, 2007, 02:57:05 AM »

Currently building a 95" Twin Cam using Andrews 37G cams and reworked, ported heads with larger valves in a 2001 Heritage Classic. CR is about 9.7:1. Also installing a SE programmable ignition module. The bike currently has a Thunderheader, no plans to change it.

I am contemplating upgrading the carb from a stock 40mm CV to a 44mm CV. I do a lot of altitude changes in the summer, so I wanted to stay with the CV for that reason. My riding style is mostly ratting around, holding the throttle wide open until I realize I am being a Dumb ass(again), doing the daily burnout, but rarely running the R's over 5.5K All that may change with the new set-up, I do from time to time need as HP as I can wring out, he he.  :huepfenlol2:

Will the larger size carb be worth the expense and possible complications or should I stay with the stock(as one local mechanic has suggested) carb. Thanks for the help. Mark :coolblue:

Also, if I decide to do the carb change later, how hard is it to do once the bike is built. The manifold will have to be changed according to the HD website. I have done this job on my Shovelhead 30 years ago(seems to me it had the hiccups everafter, even when I put on new clamp rings to stop that pesky air leak!). I am a fairly competent wrench, but by no means a pro. Thanks again. Mark :coolblue:

on a 37 build, i would stay with stock carb. going larger with a carb and not having enough velocity at the port will kill low end. your stock carb will carry another 10 hp/tq over what the 37 build will do.

i would however take the money i saved on carb and buy an ignition controller so your dyno guy can get ignition curves dialed in.

Thank you Mr Rednectum. My dyno guys do 100's of bikes every year. Does it seem likely that they already have this controller? Or is it a part that stays bolted on the bike? I already have the SE Pro Adj. map ignition system. Thanks, Mark.
